Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

You can chip it for a few KWs but probably not really worth it. Like Maverick says buying a GTI would be cheaper in the long run for sure. Don't build a car you can buy.

unless like me it's ALL about the build.

I'd agree that a chip, especially the very cost effective ST3 from the UK represents amazing bang for the buck. Go looking on here, several happy customers already...

It is difficult (and expensive) to get a large increase in power from a naturally aspirated engine (ie no turbo or supercharger), especially modern ones. If you wanted to spend lots of money it is possible to add a turbo or supercharger, but in that case it would be more practical to trade your car in on one more like what you want (hence the earlier advice to buy a GTI).

There aren't that many people in Oz selling go-faster engine tweaks for your engine, whereas there are lots and lots selling stuff to make the VW turbos go faster.

You could always put a nice CAI with a decent exhaust to free up a few KW and make the car more enjoyable to drive. Doesn't that car already have close to 145hp as it is? If its a manual I'd imagine it would be fairly brisk, but wouldn't come close to a GTI. I saw a 2.0TDI (probably chipped ... or not) overtake a commodore SS the other day

I'd get a diesel if I were you, the price is virtually the same and with a chip that thing and you'll be laughing. But hey, if you like the 2.0L keep it and make a few mods here and there and I'd be sure you would be more than pleased with it

Getting HP and Torque increases from a N/A engine is a painful, frustrating and expensive experience.

Most things you to gain HP at the top, will lose torque and response at the bottom.

Without knowing too much about the fsi2.0 I'd actually be looking at a few 'unconventional' things like reducing the weight or stiffening suspension. Some super light weight wheels with a suspension upgrade would make the car 'faster' without needing to touch the engine.

If the car doesn't already have the aluminum bonnet, this would also be of benefit.

I've had the same thoughts - i'd love a few simple mods - CAI is about the cheapest/easiest. You could also look at doing a cat-back exhaust, but from there on it's getting more expensive and for minimal returns.
