Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Oettinger vs BBS vs OZ

    Heya all,

If I can get this past the finance committee I was just wondering what your opinions are on the following wheels.

    Take into account these assumptions:

    1. Street legal - i.e. Maintain legal wheel size etc (Victoria)
    2. Street use only - no racing
    3. No rubbing
    4. Potential to upgrade springs and shocks later to lower 1" (see point 3)

So given the above here are the three choices:

    BBS CK anthracite - 18"/19"

    OZ Ultraleggra - Crystal titanium

    Oettinger - RXX charcol diamond cut 19", 8.5" x 19", 50ET

I've had a search through and read most of the threads for wheels and these are the three that I can at least source easily and also look the best in my opinion. I have some reservations about going up to 19" as the width may exceed legal limits. However it does look better cosmetically, has anyone noticed a difference in ride quality from 18" to 19"?

I've posted links to the wheels as I don't know how to link, though there are plenty of threads with wheels here and other VW forums.

    Look forward to your thoughts.

    Pharkus

on a mk5 the oettingers are by far the hottest of those rims! By far the hardest to get past the finance committee though!

CKs look nice too. Im not a fan of the ultraleggeras. They are just not substantial enough on a mk5 for my liking. everyone has their personal perference though

i hate the oettingers i reckon they're horrid.

if you want to lower your car with just springs i would suggest you may rub with 19's 8.5" wide. looks hot though i like the oz's. and dont worry about legalities, they're all legal and safe.

if i had the money id go 3peice 18x10 et13 on the rear and 18x8.5et50 on the front with 225/40 tyres all round and get damping adjustable coilovers set mega hard. but i dont have hte money. hehe.

try to maintain the 50 offset as much as you can to avoid rubbing once you're lowered. I'm on 18x8.5 et45 and I'm rubbing up front with a 22mm drop - on big bumps and hard cornering only. If they were sucked inboard that 5mm, I don't think it would be happening. BBS gets my vote - in anthracite too. Hot.

I have to ask this question sorry... Whats your budget for the wheels and tires?

You could easily get close to 5 or 6k for a set of those BBS or OZ with a decent set of rubber if sourced locally. Internationally however... thats a completely different issue. Air mail for a set of wheels from the states or Europe is around $400, so also consider that option as well.
