Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 01638 Faulty Drivers Rear Side Crash Sensor 1K0909606D

My MKV Jetta has just started to have the airbag indicator light up.

After scanning it with a cheapie tool, it's indicating 01638 Faulty Drivers Rear Side Crash Sensor. I've managed to locate the part at the base of the rear doors.

Question is - my cheapie scanning tool cannot program. If I order the part in from VW or another site with the matching part number, would I need to perform any re-programming to match the part to the car or will it be a straight swap over?

I believe I still need to clear the 01638 error code from the car, but I was more concerned regarding if the part needs to be "married" to the car?

Thanks in advance for your feedback and assistance.

No programming on the crash sensor.

Just replace it, and clear the code.
