  • 1.9 or 2.0 TDI?

is it worth the extra money to go for 2.0 TDI over the 1.9 TDI in the Golf?

    1.9L TDI 77KW, 250Nm
    2.0L TDI 103KW, 320Nm
    2.0L TDI DPF 125KW, 350Nm

IMO Going from 77 -> 103KW (33% more power) and 28% more torque is worth it.

Take both for a test drive.
Although there is very little difference in engine capacity, they are like chalk and cheese in my opinion, more than what the figures would suggest.
The price gap also just got wider between these, as the 1.9 is not available in the Pacific like it was in the Comfortline.
For a new car you would be comparing a 1.9 Edition to a 2.0 Pacific so 4.6K difference ignoring options. There was a 2.5K difference between a 1.9 and 2.0 Comfortline (using list prices).
        I’m assuming you’re referring to the 103kw 2.0, not the 125kw.

I just pulled those directly out of the latest VW brochure on their website today.

I thought DSG in the GT was more economical too. maybe they changed it???

Those figures are correct as per the VWA website.

The biggest difference to me is that these are entirely different generation engines. The upside to the 1.9 is that the USA websites have more info on this engine, and it's longevity and history. PLENTY of Vag-com "tweaking" info, and basically a lot of amassed information.

The downside is it's quite a leap backwards in design. Personally I wouldn't even consider the older generation engine, unless you are after the maximum value in the car. It would have to be the most economical, and least powerful, to drive of the two.

But I suspect the test drive would best answer the question, so drive them both back to back and decide what you like.

Given the low power and torque figures of the 1.9, I wonder if you wouldn't end up driving it a bit harder, and thus end up with worse fuel consumption than the 2.0.

Guess it depends on your driving style but I reckon most of us would tend to push the 1.9 a bit harder and end up with worse economy.

Yeah, they must have cause the figures used to be the same or at least within 0.1 from memory

I actually thought that in the 125 the DSG was more economical than the manual.

seems to have changed since the pacific and edition came out. either way, if i was actually getting 6.6 id be very happy. more like 7.4 at the mo on average.

I'd say the extra beans is worth the miserly increase at the pump. Go the beans.

What type of driving u do?

I rarely get over 80km/h and out of 5th unless i get out of the city, which is a shame.
