On the two occasions I've changed the oil the filter has been as you describe.

I had my 15000km (well, actually it was 12 months) service last week.
Had it done at a repco service centre rather than VW, as I know the guys and trust them. $235 vs $440 - and I have more confidence that the service was done than I would have at the dealer.

Anyway, i was advised that VW have changed the oil specification for the GTIs (not sure about the non turbo engines). They now use VW507 instead of VW502.

The only oil they can find which meets this specification is a castrol oil - $98 for 4.5L.

They also suggested that if I did change it myself, and didn't use the VW507 oil then I would be in for a major argument if I have engine dramas under warranty. Legally i know i could challenge them if they haven't advised me, but is it worth the hassle?

They also advised that this is a true long life oil, and will be fine for 15000km - and at $98 per change they suggested I not waste my money on the intermediate services.

Anyone with dealer contacts able to confirm the change to VW507 standard? Not all dealers seem to be clear on it, as they got the oil shipped from a dealer, and originally got the 502 oil supplied. They ended up in an argument with the dealer, and eventually got the correct oil.

I think you will find the correct VW spec for turbo petrol is VW 504.00, while the 507.00 spec is for turbo diesels. Of course Castrol SLX III is approved for both 504.00 as well as 507.00 (and as you found out, quite expensive), but there are other oils around that meet 507.00, so I would think there are likely to be other oils approved for 504.00 Note that you want "VW approved" oils as opposed to "meets" or "complies with" VW 504.00.

Maybe try Shell, my Skoda has the same motor as a GTI and it came with shell oil stickers on it.

I would only trust information from a dealer if I trusted the person I was talking to, and believed they had actually made the effort to find out the correct, current answer to my query (not what was correct 2 or 3 years ago but has been totally superceded since then).

If you do lots of short trips in heavy traffic or regularly have a fang I would be changing the oil sooner than 15,000/12 months, but I am known to be a bit anal about that sort of stuff. If you are worried about your warranty have a look in your owner's manual about frequency of servicing when driven under severe conditions. In the UK they have variable servicing of up to 32,000Km/24 months.

so i ended up changing my oil at 2200km with oil from VW cost me $98, there was nothing suspect in the oil looked good and the filter was fine just oily.
I changed mine on a mates car hoist made it real easy, with the oil filter canistor all i did was poke the orange drain plug and pushed it to the side and it all drained out before i took the canistor off made far less of mess than if i took off the full canistor.
Dont know if it wouldve actually did anything but it sounds a bit better and slightly quieter. thanks for your comments guys, decided ill probably change it between VW services so every 7,500km.
