Name and shame the salesperson/dealer and escalate this to the dealership senior manager and/or VWA.

Funny how our dealer apologised that the car arrived to them with Golf and TDI badges on it after asking for them not to be affixed and was willing to remove them prior to delivery - so you have hit a dud sadly.

Well I've just got holes drilled into the chrome on my Jetta for the front. Thankfully they didn't drill them for the corners of a std plate, so I was able to fit my slim plate without new holes.

Yes it's a pain and VW really should have the proper holder fitted, but ah well, it's done.

I would test out her claims with ringing up VicRoads.... I highly doubt (I would put money on it) that they would specify how the plate is attached (i.e it HAS to be via screws) as you've pointed out above there is really only a specific height from ground that is needed.

Best way is when you get in touch with the rep from vicroads get them to send an email through to you saying that there is no specific way of attaching plates etc etc. and then forward it onto the dealer.

That should at least help you out on that front.

Anyone have a suggestion as to how to shut the stupid cow up and get what I want?
Try asking her if she wants you to pay for the car or not ? Otherwise tell her you will insist on escalating the issue to the dealer principal.

My dealer had no problem delivering my new Octy with plates stuck on with double sided tape - no hassle at all (after all, it is easier for them to do it that way).

You've actually paid for the Rego and by law she has to register the vehicle for you to drive out of the dealership. Just keep making a fuss with the Manager of the dealership. IF that doesnt work, I'd play hardball and push it further "I dont want the vehicle anymore and Im taking it up with VW Australia" etc Its in their best interest to let the vehicle go and not drill the bumper. The plate mount is just cosmetic anyway.

            According to the Regulations:
Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations 1999 - SECT 222

            Affixing number plates

            222. Affixing number plates

            (1) A registered operator of a registered vehicle must ensure that each number plate issued by the Corporation for the vehicle is permanently affixed to the vehicle so that (assuming the vehicle to be on level ground)-

            (a) except as set out in subregulation (3)-

            (i) the number plate is at all times in an upright position parallel to
            the vehicle's axles; and

(ii) the number plate is at all times not more than 1×3 metres above ground
            level; and

(iii) in the case of a motor cycle-the centre of the number plate is at all
times not less than 30 centimetres above ground level; and

            (b) except as set out in subregulation (3), the numbers or letters (or
both) on the number plate are clearly visible from a distance of 20
metres from the number plate at any point within the space produced by
a horizontal arc of 90° and a vertical arc of 45°, as indicated by the
            shaded areas in figures 5 and 6;

Tell her to use double sided tape or use cable ties on the grille.

Thanks for that - this is a more updated set of regulations than I had found.

I think it is a case of someone via heresay interpreting a law rather than understanding the actual facts (and intent).

The intent is that the number plate is on the vehicle and clearly visable.

She (or whoever she has spoken to) has just assumed that the only way to "securely" or "permenantly" attach a number plate is with screws due to their own limited experience. I could quite happily argue that modern glues (which hold aircraft together) are far more "secure" than a screw which can vibrate loose or be removed with the use of a $2 screwdriver............

                Please also note:

                (3) Paragraphs (a) and (b) of subregulation (1) do not apply to a number plate of a vehicle if-

                (a) due to the construction of the vehicle it is not practicable to comply
                with those paragraphs; and

                (b) the number plate is affixed in a manner that complies as far as
                practicable with those paragraphs.

Which means that as long as the number plate is at all times in an upright position parallel to the vehicle's axles; and is at all times not more than 1×3 metres above ground level; and is clearly visible from a distance of 20
metres from the number plate at any point, it is fine.
