Ataching Euro plate to the soon to be my Jetta

Hi All,

Hopefully someone can answer this (can't find anything specific on the forums).

I have just purchased some shiny new full size euro plates from VIC Roads. These do not come with pre-drilled holes (and I would like to keep it that way).

Two specific questions:

1) Where do I get the brackets to hold the plates without drilling?

2) To avoid putting unnecessary holes on the car (particularly on the chrome bit at the front) I want to atach them with double-sided tape. Can any Jetta owners confirm if there are pre-drilled holes on the front (or back) for plate mounting?

I have tried asking my stealer, but I actually think she may in fact be slightly retarded. "You can only atach the plates by screwing them on, and we can't let you leave without plates".

She is insisting that both the plates and car need drilling !!!

the jetta comes with that ugly as hell plate holder i think (which they kindly mutilate your car to fit it by drilling 4 fat holes in the nice chrome bit). tell her you dont want the plate holder fitted. she sounds like a cow. oh and the plate holder is fitted before it gets to the dealer. make sure she knows that.

personally i wouldnt mount it in front of the air intake but unfortunately space for a plate is rather limited on the curvy front end of the golf/jettas. but yes go for gold with the double sided tape. if she tells you you cant leave tell her you'll call the cops; that should take care of that problem

You do understand the cops will then get him for not displaying valid plates? So i wouldn't think that would be a wise move.

About the double sided tape, I'm yet to find tape that without a decent amount of pressure applied to them hold their strength for a few months, after those months it leaves some residue on both articles.


But then again the Jetta might have the correctly spaced holes after all it is a Euro Car ......

I am happy to mount it in the "usual" place - ie on the chrome bit, but I just don't want any holes drilled in it.

If there is a "proper" euro-sized mount / bracket or there are factory holes on the car, I guess I could live with it.

Likewise I don't want any holes drilled through the plates themselves (so a frame with "hidden" holes is what am looking for).

Ideally, I want a frame that holds the number plate that can then be stuck on.

The front on my Jetta came with nothing - a pristine expanse of chrome. The dealer who delivered the car from Sydney had a NSW plate lined up and drilled into the front bumper so when she got to Canberra she just screwed the local plate into the pre-drilled holes. Problem was, the normal size plate stuck out at a weird angle because it was mounted high on the curve, so I got a slimline which looks much better (ACT doesn't have Euro style ones).

The back came with a black plastic plate holder, but I don't know where it came from (too small for the ACT plates anyway). I'm guessing there's factory holes in the back that it was attached to. I'll have to take it off one day and see. It has a strip of black adhesive material that I'm guessing the euro plates fit on, that I've been thinking about peeling off and cleaning up. It's going to get messy, and I'm sure the paint under it will be damaged eventually.

Makes a difference if you can actually see it, and pics are hard to come by it seems.

Getting any useful information from the dealer is like pulling teeth. It was hard enough buying it in the first place! I knew I wanted the 2l TFSI (but unsure of Golf or Jetta). She spent most of the time trying to talk me into a Diesel. Wasn't actually interested in what I wanted.

Had an Alfa once, the rear end was re arranged by an inattentive driver.

After the repair I could not bear to drill holes to mount the rear plate so I used velcro with adhesive backing.

Not legal I suspect and would have been easier to flog the plates if someone really wanted to but the plate never came off and no one ever stole them. (Stayed on after a second rear ender as well)

For the front of a Jetta you would have to do some work to curve the plate to get plenty of contact and this may not be practical to do on the spot at delivery time.

Pro’s and cons, take it for what it is worth.

You drill the holes and screw in the holder and then slide in the euro plate.

not sure if the holes were pre drilled or not on my jetta... never even thought about it to be honest.
standard plates were on the car when we picked it up.
security becomes an issue with number plates with the increase in the number of stolen plates. Security screws are probably a good way to make it just that little bit harder to steal them.

Does anyone know if the R32 number plate mount will fit on a Jetta?

Is the bumper assembly the same 'shape' underneath to allow it to sit around the curve and therefore be flat (at a right angle to the ground)?

Theyre all standard and the same size.

All MKV fronts fit each other.

Also the front bumpers are not drilled when they come off the boat. They are removed by the dealer and drilled to suit.

hence why some people have crooked mounted licence plates.

I just used double sided tape on my GT Sport.
For the front plate i curved it to the shaped of the plate holder thats already mounted to the bumper bar.
The back didnt require that to be done as it is a flat face.

Another GT Sport owner using the double-sided tape method.

Picked up a roll of the 3M stuff with the red backing (don't use the green and white, or plain green backing) and those plates aren't going anywhere!

Unbelievably, the dealer is still arguing about this. Seriously, who argues with their customer over something so minor?

She has advised me that it is in fact their own in house detailer that will be drilling the holes in the undrilled bumper (the car comes without holes).

She has "spoken to Vicroads" who has advised that they have a legal obligation as the dealer to "secure the number plates using screws".

This is actually B/S (not that she called Vic Roads, more that this is a legal requirement). She obviously spoke to a monkey who has no idea, but this is now gospel as far as she is concerned.

The Road Safety Act Victoria 1986 - SECT 9A states:

(2) The registered operator of a vehicle must, in accordance with the
regulations-

(a) ensure that any devices, plates and documents issued by the
Corporation are installed or displayed on the vehicle;

Furthermore, the ADR (43/00) states:

43.3.4.1.1.2. Provision shall be made for mounting a registration plate (as shown in Figure 1) to be affixed to the front of the motor vehicle forward of and parallel to the front ’Axle’ so that no part of such registration plate will be more than 1,300 mm from the ground.

That is actually the extent of it. How the plate is atached is irellevent as long as it is displayed.

It has now got to the point where the stupid cow is refusing to "allow" me to leave the dealership until they have defaced my car. She has confirmed this with her 'detailer' who is apparently not only skilled at car washing, but engineering and law as a bonus.

Alternatively, she will give me the car "unregistered, and then you can argue with Vicroads".

If I am spending close to $50k on car, some basic service is not unreasonable.

This includes but is not limited to

a) not allowing a minimum wage monkey to take to my car with power tools
b) actually leaving the dealership with a registered vehicle

I have suggested importing the correct euro part from VAG (as shown in the Jetta brochure) to mount the plate flush to the curve of the bumper, but this is the absolute and only alternative I will accept. The part itself is approx 6 euros, so has not real cost. It is not really my preferred option, but will suffice.

I can't help thinking that with the Jetta's coming from South Africa soon, this wont be an issue for Jetta owners soon.

Anyone have a suggestion as to how to shut the stupid cow up and get what I want?
