Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Dyno of at GT TSI

Just out of curiosity has anyone dynoed their (or someone elses) TSI.

Found this review by the car show and 2 of their GTs were getting 115 - 125 kw at the wheels....

How does this compare to GTs or even the GTIs?

BTW to keep it a more controlled exp. they should have at least tested each car 3 times round....

    TSI 125 kw atw

This site's results correlate with the findings you mention
125kw atw seems to be right

Must have been a calculation as theres no way on a dyno they would have 125kw atw's. Stock gti would be lucky to have 120atw's.

R32 is here and sounds awesome, loving the throttle blips on the down changes.

It's a pity they didn't put a GTI on the dyno at the same time.

stock GTIs normally get around 130ish atw don't they??? these results put the gt within 5-15 kw of the GTI

If you have a look at the Brisbane Dyno day, you'll see that the stock GTI there put out 129kw, a wrx 131kw, and my stock 125kw GT TDI 113kw. This is between 10-13% loss on each car by my calculations. Remember that all dyno's run very differing numbers, but these were all on the same dyno, same day, same conditions.

What WAS interesting is that the TDI is putting out the claimed 350nm at the wheels. Giddyup!

We'll have to get a TSI or two along to the next dyno day, would be interesting.

Had my TSI done at an aircooled dyno day - showed 100kW (on 95RON) at the wheels.

                Different dynos, different results.

there was a Golf GT TDi that pulled 125kW at the Brissy dyno day... it was a TDi and it was Superchipped - not stock!!

Yep that's always an issue, but did anyone run a stock GTI or polo on the same day? THAT allows a real world comparison, on that dyno.

Our stock GTI has been run on a dyno twice.

Once in Canberra for 149kW, and once in Sydney for 140kW.

I reckon it's pretty clear that Volkswagen probably underquote their power claims.

Thats a freak car mate - Are you sure it's stock?

All the mk5s i've seen run ~125~130 max.

i'd get that checked out mate (the car i mean).....i can pretty much guarantee you thats not stock running a 140kw and a 149kw (161 - 171kW at the flywheel). arent MKV GTI's rated at 147kW at the fly.....thats a huge discrepancy if they are.

on the dyno up here in qld, shaneths polo gti has a few intake mods and got an 88-89kW atw (~102 at the flywheel - whilst polo gti's are rated at 110kW), whilst mine is APR chipped and ran a 122.2 atw. from all the vw's we saw here on the dyno, none were running above rated figures that i can remember (most were well under).

i think your very wrong in saying that VW under rate their power claims (especially when its only your car). why would any company do that, it'd be the same as throwing money away in lost sales?

The problem with this particular car show test is that it simply wasn't standardised. If they had run a couple of GTs and then a couple of GTIs with exactly the same dyno settings, then it would have been a reasonable relative measure. But, as it was, the numbers may as well have been pulled out of the air.
