Pull back the carpet behind the tail lights. undo two bolts on each light. use a flathead screwdriver to pull out the cables and you're done . id say 42 - 45 seconds per side
This is also documented in the manual in the glovebox if I'm not mistaken and looks pretty simple.
Why does everyone say that changing the brake and indicator lights is such a big job?

Sweet baby Jesus! That almost sounds do-able for someone like me
45 seconds? Tell him he's dreamin!! The boys at Volkswagen seem to be masters at making things much more difficult than they need to be, and the tailights are no exception. The tails and headlights on my old XR5 could be removed in about 10 seconds each!
It took me about 40 minutes to change the tails over, but I'm seriously mechanically challenged and didn't have the right tools for the job (some of the bolts are difficult to get at with a big shifting spanner!!). If was to do it again though, I'd say it would be a 10 - 15 minute job.
Mischa, I'd be happy to sell the tails to you. PM me with an offer.
