  • GTI Questions

Forgive me if this has been asked but I did try and search for some updated answers.

I'm currently on the lookout for a Mk5 GTI. What are things I should be looking out for at this day and age considering their age and mileage.

Does anyone have a rough guide on the minor/major servicing intervals? Don't want to buy a GTI at 119,000kms then get hit with an expensive major service within months of purchase etc.

    Cheers for any help.

Hi mate. Major service is every 60k and timing belt at 105k. These are your major costs. Try get a 2008 or newer as less issues. Early ones had peeling interior plastics and DSG gearbox issues.

not much to look out for really

i held out for one with full history.

fuel pump/cam lobe wear - expensive and labour intensive
PCV valve - cheap and easy
coils - easy and a consumable item
make sure the the DSG is smooth
      dsg service every 60k - $400 independent / 1300 at VW dealer
      timing belt at 105k - independent approx 800-1000 / 1500-1800 VW dealer

the rest is same as all other cars. wear and tear/scratches and scrapes etc

i just bought one approx 5 weeks ago. My2008 - full VW history - 77k on the clock just had its 105k/7year service.
I'm up for the 2nd 60k service in a few months, a reputable euro specialist has quoted $370 for the DSG service.
      Absolutely love it !!

Your list is pretty well spot on but in the interests of accuracy, I've had 60,000 KM services firstly on my 06 2.0TFSI Jetta and then my 09 Eos by a VW dealer and the DSG component of the service was nowhere near $1,300, more like $450.

          Cheers

What you look out for is upto your budget. Just make sure its been serviced and not trashed. dont expect to find a 2009 model in mind condition for 10-15k.. cause you wont. I ended up finding a beautiful 2009 example at VW dealer. Because i bought the car through them i got the major service done mechtronic and what other things they could find no matter how small for free with a lifetime oil top up free.

If anything, nothing ruins are a car like smokey turbo or worn bushes! check the wheels and the for weird noises when using the dsg.

Thanks everyone. Just thought I'd give an update. I ended up finding a fully optioned 2008 GTI in Graphite Blue and purchasing it yesterday

What do you mean by fully optioned? I thought a gti was a gti. All fully optioned?

                More deets needed and pics
                3/5 dr. Dsg etc?

I guess it means all upgrades. It has the xenon lights, leather seats, sun roof and sat nav
Completely stock except for the roof racks.

The only thing is it has some minor paint chipped off on the rail above the windscreen. I guess from loading surfboards or so.

nice !!! color is something a bit different, 3 out of 4 seem to be black, white or silver.

thats decent price with the xenon's etc !!
