Sorry to hijack a thread, anybody know of any good places in Sydney for the same service that won't rip me a new one too? and 2388.90 doesn't sound so bad considering they did brakes all around too!

I used John at Volkshome in Thomastown in Feb 2015 for a 105k service and timing belt change.
Used them based on what i'd read on here, really pleased with the choice to go with them, nothing felt rushed, and were cheaper than the dealers.
Timing Belt, Water pump + Labour $895
Lube Service $295 +$95 for new wipers (changed without asking, only -)
LHF outer CV boot + Labour $1502010 MK6 2.0 TDI Golf Comfortline w/ Sport Pack *SOLD*
Yeah mate, it's the only thing that annoyed me about them, especially as I was on a super tight budget at the time. Kicked myself for not making that point clear beforehand. Otherwise I was really pleased.2010 MK6 2.0 TDI Golf Comfortline w/ Sport Pack *SOLD*
For the cost of a phone call & 5 minutes the mechanic has lost a customer of 5 years standing. The work colleagues other car lost it's clutch on Sunday & he drove it 15km without a clutch to another workshop for a new clutch & service - $1400 worth that workshop #1 misses out on.
We used to have an agreement with our customers that we could spend $20 ($50 in 2015 money) without calling them - even those customers who insist "just fix everything that needs doing. I just want it right."carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic

I used to do bulbs & fuses for free if it was a 5 minute job and the part was cheap. You'd think that you'd fitted a free set of tyres the way most people reacted. An easy way to "give back a bit" and make the customer feel you weren't trying to pry every last bit of money out of their wallets.carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic

Or was that a typo? I hope so.
My 2008 GTI is up for a TB @ 7 years but has only 66000km under its, err, belt.
Of what material is the timing belt made that makes it susceptible to failure after 7 years?
Might one presume the 7 year replacement interval has a fair degree of engineering conservatism in it such that one might go 10 years if the 105000km mark is still in prospect? If the answer to the Monty Hall problem was 50/50, the contestant, on average, would win the car 50% of the time simply by sticking with their original guess...but you can only win a one-in-three guessing game 33.33% of the time so it can't be 50/50, can it?

Hi guys, I'm in a similar position with my 2008 golf TDI....... at my 72 month service yesterday, they said im due for a new timing belt and quoted me 1200 bucks on top of the 800 i was already paying. I have only done 50k but understand that regardless of the km's, the timing belt still ages over time and it needs doing to prevent a potentially catastrophic engine failure.
Has anyone got any alternative mechanics/garages in sydney area I could get an alternative quote from? Thanks in advance.

From my investigations today VW world in Kensington were the most attentive and have offered me the keenest price - $880 parts and labour. Autohaus in alexandria also called and said at 50k km's he would feel very safe leaving it until after another service which was very honest.....

They did a couple of other things to the car, but parts and Labour for the Timing Belt, Major Service and DSG Service came in at just under $1,600. Fairly happy with that.
Even got a loan car overnight.

My friend gets his Polo done at VW Village and I think he might have tried Wolfsburg Motors at St.Peters.
There's a couple of Mobile Van guys that will travel who have a good rep but you'd have to trawl through the posts to find them.carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic

My 2007 Jetta 2.0 FSI (BVY type engine with 6-sp manual tranny) lost its timing belt a few days ago. Tow trucked to dealer in Five Dock. After three days they called to inform me that the engine had no compression on any cylinder indicating damage to valves and possibly pistons across the board. Suggested I take it somewhere and source a used replacement engine, as their costs would be "too much". Admirable advice coming from a dealer, IMHO.
I've found a BVY from an automatic tranny 2007 Golf for $800 on eBay in Fairfield NSW. While I used to do most of my own car repairs on air-cooled VWs and 1989 vintage BMWs working on the 'new era' VWs is fresh ground.
Any advice from forum members will be appreciated. I'm most urgently wondering where to take the car from where it's sitting in the dealers service area. I'd tow it straight home except that my driveway already has two BMWs and a Volvo awaiting attention to get them back on the road...
The Jetta has 205,055 km on the odometer. When I bought the car from a private party I skimmed through the dockets from the servicing and it appeared to have had a belt replacement at 150,000; but now that I look again it must have been an external accessories drive belt not the timing belt. On the second page of the 150,000 km service (not VW, but NRMA Motorserve) was the recommendation to replace the timing belt and a quote for $1250 (19/04/2013). The previous owner declined the extra work.
TIA...
Bill
