Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I wish you luck if something goes wrong.
The technology that build that car and the software in it is smarter than you chip or reflash.

What's with all the warranty scare mongering that goes on in here? Does everyone really expect their car to crap itself after flashing or suddenly develop mechanical problems? If yes, perhaps don't flash it and buy a more powerful car in the first place

I flashed mine with ST3 and am happy as pig in crap! Car has tons of grunt, better economy (5.5l/100 on fast road tune) and just drives better in general. I asked myself if I should be concerned about warranty..answer was no. Hundreds of people worldwide have done it and I haven't found any evidence of engine failures or common faults that would need warranty attention. Do you really think flashing would be a popular option if it caused drive train problems? Most engine failures are caused by owners driving the bejesus out of their car and as far as I'm concerned deserve to have their warranty void regardless of it being flashed or not.

From what I seen on here (and other forums), 99% of warranty claims are not engine related (at least for the TDI. Maybe our oilers are more reliable?) so who gives a flying fire truck about whether the counter has increased or not. The dealer isn't going to knock a warranty claim on your aircon or rattling tail light just because they can see your engine has been flash tuned.

Deciding to flash your car is no different to buying shares, an investment property or even a hot curry. Do your research, take a calculated risk and live with the consequences.

I agree with your general sentiments, but I also believe that VW will use any excuse they can to deny a warranty claim. As Mav pointed out, increasing the flash counter is a very legitimate reason to deny a DRIVETRAIN RELATED claim. No one is stating that an engine flash will void your warranty re: rattles and the like. But I've seen a few posts regarding DSG warranty issues and I wouldn't like to have a flashed engine if my DSG started acting up.

I bought a newish car because I wanted something with a factory warranty - I'm not going to jeopardise that if I can help it.

As you said, it's a calculated risk, but some of us calculate these things differently to others.

(mrx - I have a GT TDI - I think it's a Siemens ECU - apparently Bluefin are working on being able to reset the flash counter for this ECU but it's not possible at present.)

True, but some people here are so paranoid about warranty (yet they still mod their car????). Some may even seriously preach that if you use the wrong windscreen washer fluid the hallowed dealer may deny a warranty claim. They may even further preach that the hallowed dealer will conduct their own laboratory testing to conclusively decide that it was genuine washer fluid before they will validate a warranty claim to replace your wiper blades due to excessive squeeking between the 30 and 60% angle on the return stroke.

Ahhh, grasshopper say...don't use calculator to calculate

Seriously though, if you feel uneasy about doing anything you already have the answer.
