  • MKV Golf TDI - Bluefin ECU flash!!

    Hi all,

New to the forums here - after a quick look around the threads, it looks like a great place for VW fans like myself to hangout

Anyway - I have an 06 Golf 2.0 TDI that i bought new as a lease car - i recently flashed the ECU using the Bluefin hand unit from Superchips.co.uk and wanted to share some thoughts with anyone considering flashing their ECU. Man - what a difference! Was hasstle free to flash - they were very fast in emailing me out the new ECU program (30mins to be exact) 20mins later i was blasting down the road with my friend in the car (who has never been in a diesel before) and he was very suprised by the performance....so was I!!. After driving the car for roughly 2yrs stock - then upgrading the ECU, you can really feel the difference in low down torque - as well as cruising and overtaking power. I now have trouble holding traction in a straight line from the lights on dry road with brand new Goodyear Eagle F1's on. To get the traction control light flashing i just have to let it get a mere whiff of boost from down low, no need to mash the throttle to the floor, then the thing just rips through the gears on the DSG tre rapid!
I also find now, that after the DSG has had time to learn more about the engine's new torque curves, it holds the gears longer and upshifts quicker. My economy under normal driving has also increased - probably due to less swapping of cogs. Ive yet to dyno my Golf - but fully expect their claim of 130'ish kw and 395-400nm with the new tune to be fairly accurate.

Anyway, anyone considering such an upgrade for their TDI - i can fully recommend it - driving it is so much fun

    Cheers,

    DSGMAN.

    Welcome.
Great to hear your happy with the Bluefin.
I havent got one yet but might possibly be getting one soon.

I just wanted to ask. What do you mean it holds gears longer but upshifts quicker. Its a contradictory statement.

I also notice you have the DSG. Just be aware that the DSG is rated to a maximum torque of 350nm so be careful with it if youre running around 400nm.

Anyhow good to have you here and hear your thoughts on the reflash.

    Cheers,
    Logzy.

P.S. Could you update your profile with your location.

Does anyone know the exact figures? The 350nm I've seen quoted but nothing official from VW on it. Some have said 380, some 420 and it's also supposed to electronically control the amount of torque going to the gearbox as well to prevent damage.

I've also heard that the bluefin raises your exhaust temperatures way way above that of the other "chips", does anyone have any experience or testing on this?

        Hi there,

When i mean it holds gears longer - i mean higher gears i.e 5th, 6th - with less of a need to downshift. It goes up the gears faster as it has more torque, hence it's learned to upshift faster.....

As far as the DSG is concerned - ive read it can handle over 400nm with no problems - Superchips from what ive read, have a fairly good idea what VW DSG can handle - as they are involved with VW in racing - they are the official chip tuners for the VW cup - soon to introduce a TDI cup ive heard! let's hope so. So although some ppl may have heard this and that - at the end of the day I went with a fairly large and from what ive read - reputable company - they seem very well respected in Europe where TDI's a far more numerous than here in Aus.

Id luv to talk to anyone else thinking of getting one - or that already has one. I'm in Sydney

        Cheers,,

Apparently the DSG computer limits the torque anyway (a guy on another forum said he found the setting and that it was limited at 372 nm), so no matter how much torque the donk produces, you will only get just over 370 nm going through the box.

I also read that there is a way to remove this restriction though, and there are guys running turbo charged V6 Audi TT's (with about 500nm) who have not had any issues with the DSG (yet).

Could you point me to the site where you read about removing DSG torque limiters? Sounds very interesting.
            Cheers.

"Currently VF has a turbo upgrade in the works.. as for the DSG it will hold a good amount of tq before it destroys itself, before my accident I was at 320lbs tq on the stock tranny, no problems for the life of the car which unfortunately was only 35k miles... Although, of course a clutch pack upgrade will be needed to attain more tq which we all know. I would like to see a S/C for the R, but I'll be going the route of VF this time around. I wouldn't mind HPA though twin turbo ftw!!"

Found the above from another forum - im assuming he has tried 320lbs tq on his DSG which works out to be 320 ft.lbs. equals 433.92 Nm

Know if there's going to be a stage 2 (or 3) type upgrade.

Hay don't laugh, this can be done! Superchips can write a custom map for anyone.
Having mine tweaked end of June when the Australasian agent comes over. If anyones interested in Bris let me know. Some others on here getting it done and will probably book some dyno time to tune in real time

It was just a post on a forum, where a member claimed that HPA (tuning company responsible for the 3.2l turbo Audi TT's) could reprogram the transmission control module to raise the torque limit.

Here's a link to where some guys are discussing potentially using VAGCOM to raise the torque limit. It seems to come to nothing though.

I also found this below on another forum which is quite reassuring for those who are concerned that their DSG box can't handle more than 350nm:

HGP also produce a Single-Turbo conversion for the DSG with 400ps and 515nm of torque, so it kind of puts to bed he rumor that the box is the "weak" point of the car.

The limiting factor of the box is not the gears or clutch packs but the programming of TCM (transmission control module). The DSG TCM is programmed such that, if the input shaft sees more than a certain amount of torque (350 Nm) it tells the ECU to dial down on the engine power.

I assume this has been done by VW engineers to prolong the life of the box and preserve clutch packs and brake bands, as I have heard that the clutch packs are designed to last the life of the car without out ever needing to be changed... this statement comes from an article written in ATZ/MZT Engineering magazine (from Germany) in March 2004 by Dr. Frank Günter, Director of VW Program Management for BorgWarner Transmission Systems, who helped develop the gearbox.

A certain tuning company, built, at VW’s request, a few single turbo R32 DSG’s for VW to stress test their DSG’s at Ehra-Lessien proving grounds and VW have logged at full throttle 5500rpm launches with no reported issues. I believe this to be single turbo engines pushing out approx 400ps similar to HGP’s 400PS conversion.

The TCM’s were modified to increase the standard launch control rpm’s from 3500 to 5500 to further enhance acceleration times, and test the transmissions durability. They also were able to reprogram the oil pressure regulators of the clutch packs (hydraulic controls & pumps) to simulate higher clamping loads and hence enable the clutch packs to compress further to enable them to handle more torque without slipping. It should also be noted that the clutch packs are sprayed with oil to lubricate and to help dissipate heat during certain driving conditions.

FYI, official figures from VW & Audi press releases:

                      6 Speed Wet DSG - 350 Nm - Transverse
                      7 Speed Dry DSG - 250 Nm - Transverse
'New' 7 Speed DSG - 550 Nm - Longitudinal Engines & Quattro Compatible

I guess the jury's still out. But seeing that the DSG clutches have more in common with those found in automatics, then to increase power handling it would be to increase the line pressure, along with more plates.

Also, clean DSG oil (changed regularly) is probably the best insurance for a mildly hotted up motor.

                          Hi All,

Replying to DSGMan's latest msg. In the process of purchasing a GT Sport DSG TSi, do you know of a any new tech with remapping the ECU?
