  • GT TDI economy.

OK, i just got back from a weekend in Port Fairy, had hoped to get 1000km from my tank, but it wasnt to be. got close though.

    Total Distance 914.4km
    Litres Used - 54.1

    l/100 real - 5.9
    l/100 onboard computer - 5.4
    mpg - 47.8

I reset the Trip 2 when i filled up to get the onboard computer reading for the tank.

I reckon thats not bad considering i sat with the speedo needle on 110 the whole way (103 actual according to GPS, onboard climate control thingy and overhead checker thingo) didnt hold back on the overtaking of slower traffic at all and did a lot of stop start and mucking around on the great ocean road yesterday on the way home. Also had a fair bit of luggage in the back with a car fridge and plenty of clothes etc.

Overall im pretty impressed with that. 900km on $80 of fuel is not too bad at all in the current climate.

Car has got just over 6000km on it now so its just about run in.

Next time im gonna go where the roads are a bit straighter and i will get it over 1000.

Apparently, diesels aren't considered run in until about 50,000 k's. I have a 07 Jetta TDI at 25,000 k's and the economy is still getting better.

I know your GT TDI has the more powerful engine but if you wait another 10,000k's you should easily be able to get 1100 freeway k's per tank (especially if you sit at 103 actual). I can get 1150k's without trying by using cruise when I sit at 113 actual (damn Victorian speed cameras).

Someone over at TDIclub (drivebiwire I think) did a check where the compression (PSI) kept going up right up to 40,000 miles then levelled off. Somewhere in here:http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread...ght=running+in Note: don't take the RPMs in that thread as gospel, they are talking about the US 1.9TDI which revs a little harder and redlines at 5100 versus our 2.0s at 4500 (although the revlimiter on ours is 5100 also).

Gotta love the delibrate inaccuracy of the VW speedo, not.
Checked mine too, when I'm doing an actual 103km/h the speedo is sitting the width of the needle above the 110km/h mark.

Yeah, but at least now i am pretty confident that i know exactly what speed i am doing, having had 3 devices other than the car speedo confirm at the same time.

i'm willing to sacrifice .5 of a L economy and drive at 120. still easy enough to slow down slightly if you see a cop or whatever.

Tricky thing is how speed-per-angle-thing doubles when it goes past 12 oclock. That takes some getting use to.

Does anyone else notice that our cars don't work on those overhead 'your speed is' signs on the freeway. The one on the Western highway north-west towards Ballarat - I was in the right lane (Jetta) and a white MKV Golf was in the right lane and we both didn't get a score yet the cars before and after us did. I've also had it happen on the one on the Calder southbound (although once I got 'too fast' when the car I was pacing got 103). Must be the shape of the car.

Having just managed to get off a fine for doing 106 in a 100 zone (on freeway overhead) and missing out on a $160 fine and 2 points, i like to know what speed i am doing and stick to it. that 160 is 2 tanks of fuel, so it would decrease my economy drastically, as well as shorten the life of my license.

Being able to slow down when u see cops isnt useful anymore here.

Ah, the joys of living in victoria.

Coz it was less than 10km over and i have a clean history, they reduced it to a formal caution with a "special" letter i have.

If anyone would like a copy of it then PM me your email address.

I think the criteria are 3 years clean history and less than 10km over

In saying that i have used it twice in 18 months.....

although the first time was with a UK driving license.

                    It's called 'Stealth' ... ... but I wouldn't rely on it.

Ah, you were spotted at Pt Fairy. I was going to try to get a pic of my R32 next to yours, but the rain started up again.

My consumption wasn't quite as good, but then I wouldn't expect it to be.....

U should have come said g'day.

Some great spots there for photo ops if the rain had stayed off.

I had to hold off on the pics as i left my charger at home and the battery was flashing all weekend.

at least tho old n95 came in handy.

So did I....The Nikon normally lasts quite well, but I left it plugged in to the laptop overnight, and it used up most of the charge. I still got plenty, but grey sky and pretty dirty R32.

I had my car hidden away in a garage under the "Mill".....

No such luck with a garage where we stayed. btw where did u see the car at?

On another note, i forgot how good silver cars are. even when extremley dirty, still look relatively clean..
