Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2010 jetta tdi brake rotors and pads

    Hi Fellow Fans
Noticed my 170,000 ks Jetta brake rotors showing quite a noticeable ridge on the outside as if the pads (originals) had cut into them. Its equal on all 4 wheels ; the rotors are worn very smooth and there is no sign of grabbing or shudder.
I m guessing this is normal wear and that perhaps the rotors may need machining to take that lip off before putting new brake pads on ??? Pads must be due soon???
Do the GTI models ( Golf and Polo ) have extra heavy duty rotors and calipers over the standard models?
My Jetta is the 1.6 Diesel with 7 speed DSG; so little engine braking here and with a wife who doesn't know about moving the gear box selector, when vehicle in motion; I'm surprised the original pads have got this far !
    Anyone care to comment?

New discs and pads. Don't even bother with machining.

Volkswagen don't allow enough tolerance to machining, Gavin is on the money.

Contact Brakes Direct. They'll sell you quality replacement at a good price.

As the others have said, the rotors aren't worth machining. If it's braking OK then just keep on going until the pads are buggered.

My rule of thumb is when the material thickness is less than the brake pad backing plate thickness then it's time for new ones.

brake wear seems to vary drastically between owners - some people only get 40,000km others get considerably more. My brake pads are at 150,000km and only half worn but I do lots of motorway driving & read the traffic a long way ahead.

Your vehicle probably has the 288mm rotors up front. These are easily & cheaply upgraded to the GTI 312mm rotors. All you need is the 312mm calliper carrier / mount / bracket (and the 312mm rotor) as the caliper itself is common to all models. It's not necessary to open the hydraulics & re-bleed the system.

there are a dozen different part numbers inc:
          1U0615125
          5N0615125A
          1K0 615 125-C

          This might help explain:
Brake caliper carriers for 288mm->312mm upgrade Octavia Golf Leon - Parts For Sale - BRISKODA.net

But if you've managed 150,000km and don't get brake fade maybe you don't need the upgrade?
