Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Need help choosing a golf!

Hey guys im new to this site and would appreciate some info about golfs. I recently got my P's and am now looking to purchase a golf. I basically want to know what the best golf would be (performance wise) to get, keeping in mind i can't drive turbos. I've done some research and at the moment i am leaning towards an FSI, but any opinions and knowlegde you could share with me on this would be greatly appreciated.

The FSI isn't really worth buying - unfortunately if you can't drive a turbocharged car, the GT's, TDI, and GTI aren't options... so you should look at something else entirely

I wouldnt say that the FSI isnt worth buying. Its just not a rocket ship is all. Still not embarassingly slow. It would make a sensible daily driver if thats what youre after.
You dont have a lot of options though. Id just steer clear of the 1.6 perhaps.

Thanks for the replies, yeah i was looking into the 2.0 FSI. I want a golf because i find it's a bit more upper class than some of the other options out there, but as i said i would also like something with a bit of ooomph haha. If there are any mods i can look into to improve the engine i'd also give that a go if it was worth the performance increase.

I think you can look at turbo diesels then... the GT TDI would be my pick of the bunch

This is a quote from the rta website:

Vehicles – You must not drive any vehicle with:

                        Eight or more cylinders.
A turbocharged or supercharged engine (diesel powered engines exempt).
                        Modifications that increase engine performance.
Any other vehicle identified by the RTA – further details available on the RTA website.

                        Please note exemptions may apply.

So, there you go....turbo diesels are definitely allowed for P platers.

Well the choice has been made for you then (assuming money is no obstacle) - A GT Sport TDI it is! And if I may say so (without even a hint of bias of course), a fine piece of machinery it is too!

You can join the other two GT TDI drivers on this forum who are still on their P's. And to think, my first car was a Datsun 180B!

lol ok lets quit beating around the bush now

im a nsw P plater and i have a gt tdi. it has performance, economy and practicality. sounds cheesy but its true. all the other golfs will only give 2 out of those 3. you'll get one on the road for just under 40.

if you get the fsi it will stay at 110kw, you wont get much more out of it. however with the gt tdi with just a ecu reflash you can have 157kw... so essentially 1.5 times the power of the fsi. if you can afford an fsi fork out the extra cash for the gt tdi even if it means you have to save for a bit longer. not to mention the whole host of other goodies the gt tdi gets over the non gt models.
