Initially i'm looking for 2nd hand or demo GTI, thought can save money, but almost same price as new, and some even sell higher price than my current new car...

The leases that I've had come with almost stupidly low residuals. I paid out a RAV4 a couple of months ago, for about $10,000 less than I could have sold it for (and I did sell one at the end of last year, so my pricing was both realistic and achievable). My R32 will have residual of about $23,000 in just over 2 years. At that price, it almost doesn't matter how much fuel costs...

I wouldn't fuss over resale too much, both will always be in coo-ee of each other. Both respected brands.

One of the reasons I went for a VW was better resale than the local marquis. I'm expecting delivery of an R32 in a week or two and if you try and buy a used 2006 one from a dealer, I'm actually paying less for a new one with fleet discount.

The VW seems to hold its value pretty well. If you're planning to buy a new or near new Jetta, it's an F'n cracker of a car and I doubt it'll suffer more than average resale. In fact, I think it'll hold its value pretty well.

We originally took the car on a 5 year 0% residual, and the payout on the loan is about 16K, so we are in front.
Car originally cost $40K (leather and tow bar). Will be 3 year old in June.

I know what you mean, but in terms of doing a changeover, or selling, we won't have any additional to pay out. Also it's a company hire purchase (and I'm not a finance guru, so please correct me if i'm wrong) so the repayments and some of the operating expenses have been a tax deduction. In terms of a payout, at least we're not in the same position as a colleague who just looked at repayments and not residual on his Allroad, and now can't afford to change over, as the payout figure is greater than the car is worth.

If you want the Mazda 6 still, get the new model that just came out. You'll have about 3 years or so until they change the body before the prices plummet again.

The body of the new 6 that just came out will be with us until at least 2015. There'll probably be just a minor facelift mid-life. Btw, the new 6 is a massively improved vehicle over the old 6, even though the old 6 was an excellent vehicle. Not shifting too many of the new 6 yet at my dealership though...

With regards to this post, both the Jetta and new 6 are easily the best in the mid size market. Naturally, trading in on another new car down the track will show worse depreciation than selling privately. It really depends on how long you keep it, how many kms you do and what you're doing with it in a few years time.

I Sold Mazdas for under a year.

They are a brilliant car, I have owned 7 of them over the years. They barely drop in value and are very cheap for what you get.

However....

I am new to VW's but the Golf I have just purchased has nothing on any of them. I do not know how well they hold their price but I will tell you that my dealership was trading Jetta 2.0FSI's with DSG for almost as much as they were RRP in 06

So buy the car for yourself. If you prefer the VW buy it, don't worry about depreciation or any of that. A car is a liability not an asset. Just enjoy it!

A 2 year novated lease has a standard 55% residual regardless of what vehicle it is (3 year lease is 45%). So if you bought a $40k car, in 2 years time you can buy it for $22k. In the case of a Jetta TFSI with 30000kms on it, you should be able to sell it privately for about $32k according to Redbook.

just wanted to ask peoples experience with depreciation on their mark V golfs.... after say 3 years what would these be worth?

im looking into novated a mkVI and wanted to get a more 'on the ground' feedback re: residual values (market values) for the mkV.. the only thing ive got to go with currently is redbook... and whilst carsales are more of a guide for asking price instead of actual selling price..
