I was told by the service manager at my local VW dealership that I shouldn't use 100 RON fuel (such as Shells V-Racing) because it contained ethanol which could damage my R32.
So up until the major shortage around Sydney I always tried to use V-Power but since I have been forced to use Caltex and BP I haven't noticed any performance issues with them. So it seems as long as it's 98 without ethanol it's all good.MY07 R32 Black 3dr Sunroof Sat Nav TV

Also there is absolutely no point, unless you have an ECU reflash to make use of 100RON fuel.Originally posted by buchs View PostI was told by the service manager at my local VW dealership that I shouldn't use 100 RON fuel (such as Shells V-Racing) because it contained ethanol which could damage my R32.

I think that isn't true at all, seat of the pants I can definitely feel the difference. Your ECU is adaptive to a certain extent, its true to say you could get MORE benefit out of 100RON but I can tell you for sure its zippier with the V-Power Racing.Originally posted by mrx View PostAlso there is absolutely no point, unless you have an ECU reflash to make use of 100RON fuel.

Yes your ECU is adaptive to an extent, but only in terms of retarding the timing if lower quality fuel starts to cause knocking. It won't advance the timing above what it should be for the highest quality fuel it was designed for.Originally posted by Mixer View PostI think that isn't true at all, seat of the pants I can definitely feel the difference. If you're happy paying the premium for the higher RON fuel then that's your choice.

I would like to quote from the book of VW Chapter 3.2 verse 49.Originally posted by mrx View PostYes your ECU is adaptive to an extent, but only in terms of retarding the timing if lower quality fuel starts to cause knocking. "You may use petrol with a higher octane rating than .. (the correct petrol type listed on a sticker inside the fuel tank flap) .. however this has no advantage in terms of fuel consumption and engine power"
My sticker states 98 octane (MY08 GTI) but from what I read on the shell website it does improve responsiveness. Apparently and post 1986 VW can go to 10% ethanol.
However
This is excepting the "Flex Fuel Engine" which is able to run "all combinations of lead-free petrol and bioethonal (ethanol) .. provided the percentage of bioethanol does not exceed 85%."
Does anyone know what a Fuel Flex Engine is?

I asked my dealer about ethanol blends who surmised to stay clear from them.
IMO any fuel sold could be a good or bad batch, regardless. However, I do try and stay with the 'brands', BP, Shell, Mobil and Caltex (because it is the closest and en route).
Shell 98 has seemed to go missing from all the stations, so shell gets the last vote, but in my previous car, Optimax was its diet.
LOL, you might not feel much difference with a fuel with lower octane, but your engine would and it adjusts timing by listening out for bad detonations. Just don't keep the revs high with the lower fuel

Vroom
V-Power 1st choice BP Ulitmate 2nd choice
Problem is you have not been able to get V-power in Sydney for the past 3 months
Did a full test on usage and best was achieved by Shell then BP followed by Mobil last was Caltex
Well makes no diff anymore to me as my T-rex is arriving soon so the Golf GTi is on the market

I haven't either. I find that theyre all the same crap. What ive noticed is that BP is a rip, Theres always a massive line at Shell for 4 cents off people and Caltex (not woolworths) is empty, Mobil? none around my area.Originally posted by minigolf View PostVortex98 or BP Ultimate.
Our GTI usually runs on Caltex from our local independent garage, and it runs fine.
To be honest, I've never really been able to notice any great differences between brands of fuel.
I just buy whatever is closest.
