Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • GTI MKV -Fuel Brand

    Hi All,

I was wondering what brand of fuel is used by the GTI crowd? My GTI is only a month old so I have only tried BP Ultimate (Shell's RON 100 isn't available in Sydney).

Only Shell V-Power or V-Power racing for mine, both go great, and start first time every time. Have used Caltex 98 on a trip and did not like it at all.

V-Power racing is FUN, it revs really hard with that in there.

don't forget shell performance fuels have ethanol in them to boost the octane up.

                Vortex98 or BP Ultimate.

Our GTI usually runs on Caltex from our local independent garage, and it runs fine.

To be honest, I've never really been able to notice any great differences between brands of fuel.

V-Power racing does but regular V-Power doesn't. Anyway why is this an issue? 5% ethanol isn't going to hurt any car sold after 1998 in Australia (which are built for e10), it creates a little worse economy but so does my right clog stuck to the firewall

I use BP Ultimate because my employer gives me a BP card, at my previous job I had a Mobil card and used 8000, just like minigolf, I've never noticed any difference between brands.

Only Caltex and Shell actually have refineries in NSW so BP, Mobil etc. buy from the other companies and (allegedly) add their own additives. I'm sceptical about the alleged differences between fuels and think most of it is marketing hype.

                    Cheers

Ours is on a strict diet of BP Ultimate... simply because there are 3 BP petrol stations near my house!

I always used V Power as they are the closest servo to me, the price differential was 10c compared to normal unleaded (I have bought BP which was up to 16c diff) and the rents usually have a shoppadocket lying around. With the problems in NSW with V Power I have been using BP and Caltex and I did not notice any difference in performance or economy.

If you are concerned with ethanol, keep to the majors as some of the smaller independents make 98 RON by mixing 95RON with 10% ethanol to boost octane.

I use Caltex 98 (or 95 if I have to). In my area, the two BP stations are always a few cents more expensive than Shell or Caltex (the actual price, not the discount one). In fact, I can't work out why anyone would fill up with BP, unless they have some sort of fuel card.

In Canberra, Ultimate is usually competitively priced, although the change from 10¢ above regular unleaded to 11-13¢ was not really appreciated greatly, haha. Mind one of the independent BP servos in town (Jamison) had Ultimate at 19¢ over the 91RON price, back when 10¢ was the norm. I've never been back since to check if that's still the case.

Always one for brand loyalty, I used to always use Shell, then someone on VWvortex mentioned to me a few years ago that some of the additives they use can be detrimental to injectors and I stopped using them. Now I feel dirty just looking at a Shell.

Our minds can make us do funny things sometimes.

That's rubbish, I can tell you I did about 100k in my previous car on Optimax as it was called then and I had the injectors out and they were in fantastic condition.

It wasn't a Golf but its easy for another fuel company to start something like this.
