Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • After purchase fitment of RNS510 Sat Nav

    HI,

I ordered a Golf GTI in March but chose not to option the Sat Nav as it was a bit ordinary. I'm a bit cut that the dealer knew I wanted it but didn't tell me that two weeks later there was a new version RNS510 that could have been added to the order.

Anyway the point is, I want it, but need to know what the details are as far as getting it, fitting it, the sharkfin antenna and price etc.

Being a typical car dealership, everything that was possible at purchase is now impossible at delivery so I'm being told that it's not able to be done. I just don't believe this somehow.

So just wondering, I remember seeing something/someone/somewhere on the MKVForum about a bloke in Brisbane had fitted one to his GTI so I was curious to see if anyone here may know him or know more about fitting RNS510 to a new GTI. Yes mine comes with the large MFD from factory.

    I'm in Brisbane.

Thanks for your help in advance.

    Paul

    Contact Alex here alex@hp.net.au or call 1300 730 949.

I spoke to him last week, and have arranged to purchase and fit a 510.

The thread you're probably thinking of is this one http://www.ozvolks.com/forums/showth...sted=1#post576

Ive fitted one myself quite easy.
No shark fin antenna just a gps antenna in the dash works fine.

It can be done, its plug and play. All you'll need is the antenna adapter for the 2 am/fm antenna as the sockets in the 510 are closer together so require an adaptor.

I have one to sell if you want it PM me

Hi Logzy, does the RNS510 unit have the centre console mounted 6 CD stacker system?

I think you'll find that it can work with a stacker, but have to ask why. I'm not even going to bother putting an iPod interface on mine. That hard drive will do the job nicely.

If you don't have this in your car it doesn't come with it.

You would be best off buying the multimedia interface and plugging in a 32GB memory stick. Or a 320GB hard drive

I've got 2006 GTI with the factory SatNav, including the 6 stack CD unit.

The centre console mounted 6 CD stacker is an optional extra with RNS 510

I optioned both RNS 510 and 6 disc stacker and i'm not all that impressed - for starters the CD artist/track info doesn't display on RNS 510 for any of the 6 slots (works perfect on RNS 510 DVD/CD slot), plus i think CD selection via RNS 510 is clunky - easier to push the buttons on the stacker IMO!

                I'd stick with Ipod adapter!

The 510 has a 30gb HD in it and 20gb of that is useable for mp3's plus it takes a 2gb SD card.
I really dont see the need for anymore than this so dont bother with a cd stacker.
Its so much better not having cd's in the car.

The only reason i would consider adding a mulitmedia interface is to play video from the ipod through the 510. THere are a couple of interfaces out there that will do it but i really dont need it, not for 250 euro anyway.

Out of interest have you tested a SDHC card in it?

I've heard you can get 8gb cards to work in the RNS510, have you tried any larger ones yet?

No. I've only used a 1gb. I did read somewhere that 2gb was the limit and someone else couldnt get a 4gb working.

It depends on the card and it's setup internally. I'll try and find some more and test some when I get my unit. It's kind of stupid to limit it like that. I wish they had a usb port instead (then they wouldn't make their money out of their multi media interface!).

The reader I think is a bolt on piece on the bottom of the RNS510 from what I've read but I don't think it has a usb interface that connects it (maybe internally).

If it could read SDHC cards that would be perfect as I would just toss a 32GB in there.

Owners manual says a max of 2gb. But it also says that it can use DVDs carrying up to 4.7 and 8.5 gb....so I might try transferring via 'mega' MP3 DVDs.
