  • RNS510 Help or Advice

    Hi Guys,

I have a Golf GTI and it came with a RNS510 the only crappy thing is that when you play a dvd the picture does not display i know its a safty thing but what about your passangers they would like to watch the screen. Obsely i am not going to be watching it as i am driving. Just wanting to know if we can disable the safty feat ? i knwo there is plenty of other dvd players in the market that plays the dvd picture while moving.

It would make your car unroadworthy, and you will be booked if seen by the police.

          It's the handbrake

They connect a wire to it remove wire and presto, you can always change source if pulled over

True, but they can then check to see that it doesn't work....and you're then defected.

                Hi all,

Does the RNS510 Sat Nav have TV too? My sales guy said no but I read the manual online and it said yes . Have they disabled it for Aus? It's a bit of a wank but hey, I wouldn't complain if I had it. Has anyone been lucky enough to use it on a day-to-day basis? How is it? I ordered SatNav on my new car (which isn't here yet ) and when the order went through they said I was going to get the new version (the RNS510) which is good, but I haven't had a chance to play with it. One last thing, what does the shark fin aerial look like? Any pics? I wasn't aware that it would have a different aerial (once again, thanks mr. salesman).

                Thanks guys
                Alan

I've been seriously considering the satnav, and even with DVD capability, I just can't justify ~$3k on it.

With regards to enabling it when you're driving, don't do it. If something on it caught your attention or distracted you at the wrong time...

This is a shark fin aerial (on a BMW):

Better than a whip aerial IMHO.
                  Nothing to see here...

You can get a tv tuner for it.
Do a search with google and you will find all the pictures and info you are loking for also have a look on the vwnavi forums. It has been covered many times.

Let's not forget a DVD playing in the center console, even if it is entertaining for passengers, would be quite a distraction to the driver.

This law is one that makes good sense not to break.

                        Who says it's a law?

You can buy a million 3rd party in dash DVD players, and none of them would know when you were driving because they're only hooked up to power and speakers (not CAN BUS or whatever),

Further, tons of cars can now be optioned with passenger DVD players, I see them in the back of headrests (showing movies) every now and again, clearly visible outside the car (it is a law that you can't have anything descracting in the car that can be seen from outside, this includes shiny things hanging from your mirror) and these are vendor fitted devices.

You can have GPS showing you animated CGI, you just can't have Pixar doing the same thing? What's the difference?

Ahh I'm wrong - found the ADR.

                          18. TELEVISION AND VISUAL DISPLAY UNITS
                          18.1. General
All television receivers or visual display units and their associated equipment must be securely mounted in a position which:
                          18.1.1. does not obscure the driver's vision;
18.1.2. does not impede driver or passenger movement in the vehicle; and
18.1.3. is unlikely to increase the risk of occupant injury.

18.2. Restriction on Visibility of Screen
Unless a driver's aid, all television receivers or visual display units must be installed so that no part of the image on the screen is visible to the driver from the normal driving position.

Still doesn't explain why you can buy so many in dash players that can been seen by the driver, and I'm sure don't switch off when you're moving.

Australian Design Rule 42/04 in case anyone else was looking : )

They're illegal like the aftermarket HID kits but people still fit them.

The installer is supposed to connect them to the handbrake so when the handbrake is off the screen is off.
