Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf/Jetta TDI options

    HI all

I have done a lot of reading on this and am still left with some questions.

    Ok,
I am looking for a manual, so need to worry about the DSG box.

Golf or jetta i am fine with whichever. Will be looking around 10k price bracket.

My only main questions are the motor options.

Which one has fewer problems than the other? 1.9 or 2.0? One as far as I can gather is a PD and the other has a DPF.

And one of these suffer from cam wear and ultimately failure.

Which one would be my better option? Im not worried about power as the aim of the game is economy and reliability.

Which years are to be avoided in the mkv range? I read somewhere as well that if the engine code ends in a "A" then you have to steer clear as there was a problem with the block going porous or something.

Any and all advice is muchly appreciated

Go jetta or golf 2008 onwards with a BKD engine... BKD has no DPF but is quite a noisy engine compared to the new common rail diesels but when you are getting a 10k car that will do 1000km to $80 diesel then its worth it. 2008 onwards have less issues with running gear and also trims etc... I have a 2008 tdi bkd with 150000km on and had no issues. Drives nice and 850km city driving to 1000-1100km to the tank long hall.....VDUB..

Some issues should have been resolved by 2008 also - earlier models are more prone to AC compressor failure, and minor wiring bugs in the door harness and underseat airbag sensors.

Also - check that the timing belt has been done. Should be done at 105 000 or 120 000 km depending on who you ask and costs a fair bit ($1000 or so), so factor that in if buying a lower mileage example.

Make sure injectors and wiring harness have been replaced under recall should be a sticker on inside of a pillar

Jetta will offer you better value for money as it comes better equipped and has that MASSIVE boot.

Jettas are highly underrated for what they offer.

I'll back up what the others have said, and get an '08-onwards.

I don't think the manual transmission is all that common in them though, but the DSG in later ones is not as problematic as everyone seems to think. Just don't get an FSI auto. Those transmissions are a ticking timebomb.

                    What thread was that?
I have a '06 BKD. I checked with VW after recalls become serious & they checked my VIN No. & told me mine wasn't affected by the injector recall. In fact I checked with the parts dept. & they told me that they had never sold an injector of the type fitted to my BKD.
Not sure why the '08 would be any better than an '06 except they would generally have lower mileage. I bought mine new & had absolutely no warranty claims or faults for almost 9 years.

I know the first of the Mk5s had a few issues. From memory there was some problem with the steering, moisture in taillights & reflectors falling off the inside of front doors. There is a change to the timing belt drive around mid. '06 with a larger stud for the belt tensioner & oval lower drive sprocket.
Mine is a manual & the gearbox is superb, better than our Tiguan.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.
