    When driving in ACT at some large roundabouts the DSG has selected the next gear at a higher ratio. If I need to get a move on it takes time for the box to select a lower gear and I seem to stop in the round about with the other car bearing down on me. Ops sorry doesn't cut it. Would using S selector help or should I go manual.
    Or just sit there until a break comes. Ppl don't appear to know the ruling on round abouts that the first car in has right of way, in reality the main traffic flow tailgate each other so you are forced to make a decision.... meek or aggressive

    S should help, as that shift pattern is designed to hold lower gears for longer. Manual control is obviously the ultimate, as you can have exactly the gear you want, when you want it.
    Nothing to see here...

      wow, even when in the wrong gear I seem to get enough power for any normal situation.

      S will keep the natural revs high so there will be more available power coming in faster.

      Of course Manual mode will give you the choice of gear and when to shift (within the boundaries).

        I can't see the point of S in what is basically city driving. If the DSG changes up, you can tap it down if you have paddles. But, realistically, the only time I've ever found the DSG to be in the wrong gear, is when I've mucked with it, either via the paddles or by using manual. Left alone it gets it more right than I do....

          i have also found the downshifting to be a little sluggish at times... Jetta TSI here.. no paddles...
          found it slow when about to overtake someone and want a quick acceleration to get round them asap... really have to plant the boot, and then it over reacts and feels like you are in a rocket..
          now i shift it to manual and downshift myself till i overtake the car then slip it back to auto. paddles would be so much more convenient.

            Only place i have a problem with it is speed humps, unless i maintain a higher speed it wil try to drop fro 3rd to 2nd. i normally just lock it in manual 3rd. ive never actually seen a need for "S" only time ive used it is for when i need to get a good drag off the lights to merge.

              As I have said in other threads, I find the "S" sports mode to be comletely useless. It never lets the revs drop below 4000 which is ok for the track etc but useless commuting. If you could adjust how aggressive the "S" mode was it would be much better. Keep the revs above 2500 etc would suit my driving a lot better.

                My thoughts too.
                With the TDI it wants to keep the revs around 3000 and its too high IMO when the TDI has a 4500 red line.

                  +1 for that.

                  On a 'spirited' drive around some hills and twisties, i thought I would pop it into S to give me a better response up the hills. Pretty useless as even when cruising in the straights the revs are ridiculously high.

                  I don't see much point for 'S' except for on the track, it is an aggressive option to say the least.

                    D = too sedate
                    S = too agressive
                    imo

                    les888 it takes a while to get used to the dsg box and its characteristics. yes there is a number of ways of ensuring that you're in the correct power band for the situation (including keeping it in D) its just what ends up suiting you. when i had a dsg i would slip it into S when i knew i needed a bit more kick.

                      S is pretty good for the run up from Stanwell Park to Stanwell Tops, shame it hangs on to 5th gear on the highway!

                        i think you mean S is good for thrashing the crap otu of your car through the national park and/or kanga valley

                        manual (with a clutch pedal) is much better though no more dsg for me

                          Les88, I have exactly the same prob on a left hand corner near home. Every time I take it the DSG selects 3rd and as you apply power the car slows as it realises its in the wrong gear and changes to 2nd.
                          As I now know that this will happen I use the paddles to change to 2nd prior to entering the corner and so no problems.

                          Also agree with S as being only useful when thrashing the car. Only time I used it for any length of time was following a bike around some twistees going up the hills.

                            has any one realised wen using "Sports Mode" wen taking of the lights pedel tothe metal and u relise it once u overtaken or wat not - that i will just be revvin wayyyy to hiiiiii and no matter wat its stuck in gear - i've had the happen to me wen it hit the red zone and even wen i backed off i stayed in gear until i shifted it manually . . . .

                            anyone have this happen to them ???

                              To be honest I couldn't be happier with my GT Sport TDI with DSG, after driving from Syd to Brisbane then back down thru northern NSW for me it has perfomed flawlessly. Yes 'S' mode lifts the revs up but that's what "SPORT" mode if for!!!! Driving from Murwillumbah to Lismore on some very challenging roads (and not at break neck speeds) the DSG was always in the correct gear and to me, never revved too high. It was perfect when coming up to corners just lift your foot off the accelerator and the car pulled up nicely without having to use the brakes, then ease on the throttle mid corner and it drove smoothly out of the corner. I also use the paddles on occasion when driving around in 'D' as it helps to suit whatever driving conditions are present ie: traffic, road conditions etc.. I treat the DSG as if it was a manual and am selecting gears or changing into 'S' mode when and if needed, having said that driving around Sydney I normally just leave it in 'D'.

                              All in all I really can't fault it and think it's the best gearbox available today and performs exactly the way it was designed.

                              Well that's my 2 cents and 5 bucks worth!!!

                              Also have approx 8,500km on my GT Sport TDI & took delivery on 10th March 2008. So yeah it does a wee bit of work
