  • Thinking of buying a 07 GT DSG

    Hey guys,

Just lost a hell of a lot of money purchasing a 207GT (Peugeot) a few months back.. so looking to come back to VAG as Ive never had an issue with one, touch wood!

The plan is to either purchase a brand new 66TSI Polo My15, or a MKV GT DSG

wanting to know the ins and outs on them, mods available, what to look for, dsg reliability, adding AUX/Bluetooth streaming and what I should look for when buying.

I have owned a VR6, misses has a 1.6 Mk4 auto which I constantly give a hiding, I previously owned a 00' facelifeted polo and the mother in law owns 02 beetle.

How do these twin charge engines go?

    Cheers,
    Aiden

    Hey.

If you just lost cash on a Pug, you don't want the 1.4 Twincharge. VW have canned that engine. Out of all the MKV engines, I've seen it to be the most unreliable. Also at the age they are now, I wouldn't do it.

    Ever tried a 2L TDI?

The golf v gt is a well speced car. If it has been looked after you shouldnt have any major issues. I myself bought one instead of a mkv gti (came down to cost). I now have 145k on the clock and no concerns to speak of. Mine is a 2008 manual.

In terms of modifications depends what you want. There arent as many off the shelf kits for these cars as the gti took most attention.

Peformance wise its relative. Of course a gti or the 2.0l diesel will have alot more poke but considering it is a 1.4l engine the performance is impressive and fuel economy is good.

Obviously it comes down to what you are looking for in a car

I bought my GT (MY08 ) about 18 months ago. I have a manual. I love it and really enjoy driving it. There's nothing wrong with the twin charged engine. My mechanic has been over mine a few times to look at things for me and I've only had 2 issues: the Turbo DV failed (when removed it was the original part and VW had upgraded it to avoid this failure) and a slight misfire that was fixed by cleaning the gunk on the intake manifold (this is becoming more common in direct-inteject cars).

I have also had an A/C compressor fail but that could happen to any car is not symptomatic of the Twincharged engine.

I love the immediate pick-up and I am a sucker for supercharger whine which sound fantastic early on a winter's morning. Being only a fraction slower than a GTI but lighter over the front axle (smaller engine), it's quick and nimble.

Check the service history is valid and do all the things you should do when you buy a second-hand car. I bought mine with 92K on the clock and it now has 111k.

Benough, this exact engine isn't made any more because of Euro emissions but the revised Twincharged is still being used (I have one in my MY14 Tiguan). The Twincharged engine to avoid was the one in the first revision of the Mk6 Golf as it had a few issues from the emissions change but that was a few years ago now.

Hate to tell you this but the earlier BLG coded motors tend to self-destruct more than the CAV engines do. Often see them cracking/melting pistons(which to be fair the CAV motors do often too) but have also seen quite a few smash valves due to timing chains jumping.

If I was choosing between which twin charged equipped VW I would own, it would be a toss up between either the late model polo GTI/Tiguan with a CAV(E) motor or the CTH. I would completely avoid both the Golf models.

Sorry to venture off topic, but may I ask how your intake manifold was cleaned, who did it and the cost?

Blg engines when serviced regularly and correctly dont have the same issues as the cav and cth engine.

Piston failure in the blg family mainly comes down to incorrect oil and poor qaulity fuel.

As i said i own one myself. I too love my gt sport and im glad i decided to save 6k to get a same factory optioned spec gti (average price diff at time of my purchase).

Sorry about the long delay on the reply (been flat out and nowhere near VWW for a bit).

I got it done by Prestige and Performance in Coorparoo (they do all the work on my car). They took the manifold off and used picks to scrape the gunk off the back of the valves (rather than the manifold itself, my poor explanation in the first place). It took them a while to work out how to do it without removing the supercharger first. This cost me $660. If they had removed the S/C too then the cost would have been over $1k and I probably wouldn't have bothered doing it.

Having had it done though, I am using less fuel (getting 50-80km extra out of each tank), the induction noise sounds a bit different and I swear it's a touch more responsive on acceleration.

Just fyi there is no need for supercharger to even be considered removed for intake manifold removal. Anyone that suggests removal of supercharger definitely doesnt know what they are working on.

Intake manifold can be removed in 45min. And is a fairly easy task.

That's interesting. I do sometimes wonder if I am paying for being a guinea pig on the basis that they are most comfortable with the 2l turbo engine...

There's been 2 things that I've had them do that's taken longer than I expected.

                      Haha yea i can imagine.

That is the major problem with the 1.4tsi engine and also vag cars in my experience. I see too often cars that have been worked on by people who dont know what they are working on. The 1.4tsi looks more complex than it actually is.

I see time and time again customers been overcharged and given bogas stories on how complicated the car is to hide the fact they themselves have no clue how a car works.

Sorry went off thread topic there :p.

The gt sport is a great all rounder and if/when an issue occurs are very straightforward to repair and arent all doom and gloom as many people believe. I am extremely happy with mine.

                        Back on topic though.

New polo is a well equipped and priced car no doubts there. However personally i feel you compromise on size too much. Yes you have a great warranty but get a well maintained golf gt and you will have trouble free driving for years to come

Yeah, I looked at a couple of Polo GTIs when I bought my GT last year. I went with the Golf mainly on practicality grounds (bigger boot, 5 doors). I also preferred the more seamless power delivery with the twin charging to the single turbo of the Polo. In traffic off boost it's a 1.4 so you can get good fuel economy (sometimes).
