    Hey Guys,

I'm Alfy, just new to the forums.. I am looking at making a transition from Japanese to European, and in saying that, I love the Golf GTi..

Could you be so kind in sharing some of your buying experiences with the car.. Eg, how long did it take to take delivery of the car? how does the power band feel? is the car easily modified? servicing costs? etc

I'm so into this car.. Just need to clarify a few things before I go and buy one.. Probably will be purchasing end of June early July.. After I turn 24

    cheers guys

    Welcome.
Most, if not, all of your questions can be answered by reading through the forum.

yep, read whats already been posted, a heap of info there.

if u want a custom one june/july, better order it now (4 moths at least if it has to be custom built), otherwise if u arent too fussy as to the spec u want then they usually can find the common ones for immediate pickup.

Best decision you will ever make, we did the same, never looked back! Only association I have with Japanese cars now is working for a Toyota/Mazda dealer...

          sup alfy!
i was also in the market for a GTI as well
but i ended up buying a Jetta TFSI instead (basically a sedan golf GTI, without the harder suspension and other things the GTI has like different steering wheel, different exterior front end etc)

I test drove the GTI and man it goes hard! I ended up buying the automatic DSG jetta instead of a 6 speed. I tested on the GTI both manual and DSG and i have to admit the auto impressed me more than the manual. on the GTI u have flappy paddles on the steering wheel so when ur in sports mode u can shift using them instead of the gearstick to push up or down to shift up/shift down.

power band is a very smooth delivery i found. theres no neck snapping jerk but you do feel quite a bit of torque.

in terms of mods, depends what u mean by easily modified. i guess since we both come from JDM backgrounds it wont be as easy as modding a JDM car with tuner parts and parts wont be as abundant, but ive been researching and you can actually get things like intercooler, blow off spacer, gauges, suspension, sway bars etc. But the parts are more expensive than parts for, say, a DC5S/DC5R.

I ordered a silver jetta and thats comin in end of next week. I rang some dealerships nd they have GTI's in stock but either basic (i.e no leather, no nothing) or fully optioned. They dont have any in between. I was initially going to get a white GTI without any of the options and that could have been delivered to me within 2 weeks. All others can take anywhre from 6 weeks to 4 months ive been toldd

alfy dude when u get ur car we gotta go for a photoshoot. hahahah been ages since ive seen ya. still workin out yeah?

guys i'm going to Denlo Parramatta today...

i'm actually considering leasing the car, as I am a manager at work, I should be able to claim some of the repayments on tax.

What are your thoughts of leasing???????

Depends on your specific circumstances, unless there are some financial advisers in here and you're willing to post all your personal details then I doubt you will get advice that will be correct for your circumstances*.

As per above, nobody can confirm whether leasing will suit you.

You need to either talk to a leasing specialist, your employer, or a financial/tax adviser.

If you're going to salary sacrifice, you need to do a sufficient amount of KM's (typically around 25,000km+ a year) to get any benefit. The higher the income, the more expensive the car, the greater the benefit.

If you're self employed, ... that's a completely different kettle of fish.

well put it this way, my accord euro is 1.5yrs old and it has done 50,000kms.

I think i might discuss it with the dealer when i pop over today.

The dealer's Business Manager can't dicuss it with you, as he/she is not a finanical adviser (as other ppl have posted here). However, they'll throw the options on the table for you (chattel mortgage, lease, novated lease, etc). Talk to your accountant or tax agent, they'll steer you in the right direction so you can get the right tax benefits.

Kilometers per year is just one thing to consider.

There are plenty of companies doing car finance - we use Autopia where I work (www.autopia.com.au) for the salary sacrificed novated leasing, but there are plenty of others who can give you decent advice.
                            Nothing to see here...

I just finalised a novated lease for a Jetta TDI, and it took me a while to get my head around the tax side of it. As the others have said before, the big factors are your salary level, the value of the vehicle and the number of km's you drive each year. There are breaks at 15000kms and 25000kms, and this has to do with the amount of fringe benefits tax.

As pointed out already - get advice. I know a guy who got screwed because he wasn't making an "employee contribution" to offset his FBT, so come tax time he was charged the full 48.5% rate and got hit up with a $5000 bill. Ouch.

The good thing about the lease is they calculate the residual value of the car up front, and you can buy it out at that rate when the lease ends (or re-lease it, or trade it in for another car etc.) My lease company says a 3 year old Jetta TDI with about 53000kms will be worth 45% of its original value.

The bad thing is that you aren't allowed to mod the car at all. After all - it belongs to the leasing company.

Google "novated lease calculator" and you'll get a couple of sites you can punch numbers into.
