Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Major Service GTI -what else to change.

Hi, my next service for my GTI is the major 105k service.

Obviously I will change the timing belt and other parts as per the book, what other parts do you recommend to change while they are doing the timing belt?

I need to order some parts for my BMW so may as well order the VW parts from ECS at the same time as shipping is expensive.

I was thinking of changing the following OEM parts:

    Timing Belt - 06F 198 119 A ( Genuine VW Cambelt Kit (Toothed Belt Repair Kit) consisting of 1 x Toothed Belt, 1 x Tensioner Roller, 2 x Relay Rollers, 2 x Bolts & a Nut)

Waterpump 06F121011 (original has plastic impeller, is it better to go aftermarket with metal impeller?)

    Fuel Pump Cam Follower 06D109309C

    Spark plugs OEM #101905631B.

    Air Filter 06F133843A

    Cabin Filter 1K1-819-653A

Oil filter (have some OEMs at home)

I will also replace the Diverter Valve with a OEM Revision D. I believe the part number is 06H145710DKT

Is it worth also changing the Serpentine Belt Part #06F-260-849-L?

Can anyone suggest any other parts I should change at the same time or any other tips for the major timing belt service.

I will get most likely get Volks Care in Boronia to do the actual service.

FYI the following were replaced a couple of years ago when I had issues with the car:
    06F129101L PCV Valve
06F133482E VW INTAKE FLAP ADJUSTER MOTOR
    MY07 Red GTI 3 Door

Did some research, the cabin filter 1K1-819-653A is for Left Hand Drive vehicles... so 1K2819653A/B (A or B) is the correct one for Right Hand Drive vehicles. I'll this buy locally.

I also found that the Water Pump should be 06F121011X, and is actually the same price in Australia as ECS for geniune VW/Audi, so I will buy local.

The rest of the genuine parts are much cheaper from ECS than local.

As per the VW service schedule 105k service is only oil, oil filter and timing belt kit + waterpump. Everything else is up to you/depending on the condition of the items. Best for say $20 just do the drive belt/s while you're there, and since they are off...

Should also change the hydraulic tensioner at the same time. Drop me a pm if you need a price on genuine parts or labour.

Thanks for the tips guy. I thought the water pump wasn't part of the service but it's silly not to do it at the same time. Better to change things earlier while doing the major service.

Do you know the part numbers for the drive belt and hydraulic tensioner?

Snail, I won't need it serviced until end of the year but am buying the parts from ECS as I have to order some BMW parts now.

          What workshop you from?

Waterpumps are cheap. Stupid to not do it while your in there tbh, and if you buy a genuine pump from a dealer they will usually do it as exchange to save you $$.

Surprisingly I can buy a genuine water pump here for the same price as ECS- $135.

I'm not sure if my independent workshop will swap, but I'll ask for the part back if they don't.
