Without sounding snotty nosed or anything - but I don't think you can compare an S3 with a WRX. You buy an S3 for the car AND the badge. You buy a WRX for the car. All these value equations are very questionable, you could also say that a proton satria gti is better than both for the same reasons....where does it stop?
Also the S3 has 350Nm from 2500-5000rpm - thats not that high up the range and I can tell you it uses it pretty damn well. The R32 is no slouch - but the S3 just felt like an absolute machine. Pity it doesn't have the sound to back it up - it doesn't sound *too* bad, just nothing like the R32. When I drove it, the S3's engine didn't feel as linear as my R32 (felt a heap more powerful though) but I wouldn't say it was as bad as previous gen STI's either (slingshot power up high up in the rev range)
The S3 is a car that can easily be driven sedately around the 'burbs - its just that good. Insurance isn't too bad either at 1200per annum, comprehensive, living in St Kilda.
Each to their own really, but for mine - I would feel shortchanged driving around with the subie interior after forking out all of that dough.
Again - thats only my $0.02.
