Without sounding snotty nosed or anything - but I don't think you can compare an S3 with a WRX. You buy an S3 for the car AND the badge. You buy a WRX for the car. All these value equations are very questionable, you could also say that a proton satria gti is better than both for the same reasons....where does it stop?

Also the S3 has 350Nm from 2500-5000rpm - thats not that high up the range and I can tell you it uses it pretty damn well. The R32 is no slouch - but the S3 just felt like an absolute machine. Pity it doesn't have the sound to back it up - it doesn't sound *too* bad, just nothing like the R32. When I drove it, the S3's engine didn't feel as linear as my R32 (felt a heap more powerful though) but I wouldn't say it was as bad as previous gen STI's either (slingshot power up high up in the rev range)

The S3 is a car that can easily be driven sedately around the 'burbs - its just that good. Insurance isn't too bad either at 1200per annum, comprehensive, living in St Kilda.

Each to their own really, but for mine - I would feel shortchanged driving around with the subie interior after forking out all of that dough.

Again - thats only my $0.02.

I'll bet there's quite a few around that buy the WRX for the badge, in fact possibly more than the S3. How many young blokes do you see in a older WRX ?? How many do you see in an S3 ?
You sure wouldnt buy the WRX for its interior.!!

I agree, its the point I was trying to make,

WRX owners buy the badge to differentiate themselves from the *insert lesser car here* - eg Suzuki Swift GTi

S3 owners buy the badge to differentiate themselves from the *insert lesser car here* - eg. WRX

Bentley owners buy the badge to differentiate themselves from the *insert lesser car here* - eg. S3

There will always be buyers who buy a certain car for the badge, the point that I was trying to make is that generally if you can afford the S3, you are not going to consider the WRX....just like if you can afford a C63AMG you are not going to cross shop it against the S3 etc.

Wow - this has really strayed from the OP topic - sorry mate!

Ive just bought an MY01 S3, but while shopping, I looked at similar year WRX's, which happened to be around the same cost. This showed me that the S3 had depreciated a lot more in a similar timeframe, but I'm speculating on there being a lot less depreciation in the future!!.

I ended up buying the S3 for a few reasons:

          - its a lot more sophisticated, with a better interior,
          - the S3 is much rarer, whereas every other man and his dog seems to have a WRX these days
          - I didnt want to have to put a baseball cap on backwards every time I took my car for a drive
          - The S3 proved to be slightly cheaper for insurance, even with the mods my S3 has.
