Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Hey Bazzle, what is the sound quality and menus like on the RNS replicas?

Ive seen a few of them pop up on ebay and they look the goods.
Just want the sound to be as good as OEM ..

Menus look slightly non-intuitive, but i could be wrong.

      Sound is good
      800x480 tft is v good.
Bluetooth,DVDs, vids, sd, usb etc. Ive even got HD tv but reception is flaky.
Menus are not as good as RNS but do everything you need.
      The Navigation is superb.
I use latest iGO with R17 maps.
Ive had Garmin and TomTom plus a few others to trial but like iGO8.3.4 best.

i haven't had any problems with the RNS510... maybe because i don't know where i'm going half the time, so can't tell if it is taking me the long or short route...

But today... heading to mona vale from the eastern suburbs... it starts the guidance... but then after 5 seconds, it comes up with there are no recommended routes for this location... i tried a few times through the trip... and until after the bridge and after i missed the exit, it started working again... i don't know if it was a one off? or just the area?

Then when i headed home later today... the 1st time i pressed it, same thing... but a minute later when i tried again, it was all fine.

den525, I have experienced the exact same problem coming from Eastern Suburbs heading to Northern Beaches. On another topic, and possibly another thread, how is the APR Stage 1? I too have a Pirelli and am thinking of going with APR but would like your feedback?

That usually means it's lost all or most of the satellites, therefore doesn't know whereat it is at.

Not unusual under a roof or bridge, in a tunnel and sometimes among tall buildings etc.

Once it can lock onto enough satellites it comes good again, but might need restarting to clear the error.

Doesn't matter, if the unit is operating correctly it knows where the car is even if it's out of satellite coverage by using the car's systems to determine speed, direction of travel and so forth.

my thoughts exactly.. and that's the benefits of oem integrated systems that can use the cars telemetry to see how far along the existing route the car is. ie, if you lose satellite coverage, teh car will know how far along the underground tunnel you are...
More opportunites have been lost from indecision, rather than wrong decision....

According to the manual it does — but never-the-less sometimes it doesn't, and there appears to be nothing wrong with the unit itself.

I can usually turn mine on and set it up in the (iron-roofed) garage, but several times I've had exactly the same thing happen "there are no recommended routes for this location" even though it may be but a short distance away.

When this happens for a mapped area it doesn't find the home location it's sitting on, either.

Try the same setup a while later and all is OK again. To my mind this can only be failure to locate enough (any?) positioning satellites.

Note it also happens at times with the portable unit indoors, which bears out my theory. Maybe if it doesn't find satellites when turned on? I'll admit it's never given this error when travelling, just occasionally got itself confused. (see below)

Incidentally, my TDI had its first annual service this week and the dealer kindly updated the satnav to the new maps.

Today I was going to an outer suburb and since I'd be going past I again set it up for the Doncaster Road address it got lost on earlier; Worked perfectly, and now displays a count-down of the remaining distance on the MFD — haven't really looked at other changes.

Still no improvement on the back-blocks roads, tho' — little-used roads the cheap portable finds easily still don't exist for the RNS510, which seems rather silly.

You'd think if they're on one (now superseded) set of Sensis maps they'd be on all.

Pretty well forever (the longest I've been out of satellite coverage is not that long however). But in one of the car parks I use it's four levels down and a pretty big car park so you watch it go round and round and it has your exact direction and location spot on even after going down four levels.

When my sat nav didn't have the issue with storing it's last location (upgraded an A unit to 2600 maps) when you started the car after it was sitting there all day it still knew exactly where you were and followed you back up. Even going through tunnels etc it works flawlessly, you get no errors, still get directions and so on.
