  • 2005 MK5 Golf 2.0 petrol issues

    Hi Everyone,

Ive been having a nightmare of a time with the 2.0 Petrol Golf that my lovely girl owns, but I drive for work (my motorbikes and car (1963 Triumph TR4) are unsuitable).

In the 15 months or so of ownership the car has been experiencing a regular problem where the power will cut out for a split second, taco will drop and then back to normal in between half a second or sometime longer maybe a second an a half. that is a bareable problem when cruising in 3-6th gear, but if it happens at launch from the lights or while in traffic the car will often stall if I cant jam my foot into the clutch quick enough.

Your first question to me will likely be "why the hell have you been dealing with this for 15month or more without getting it sorted" well its kinda complicated and I don't think my answer will be of any importance to the problem. I would have liked to fix the issues but have been unable.

In addition to this problem, the car has also just had an oil leak at the oil filter housing repaired at considerable cost. plus a leaky radiator identified and replaced at this time.

Also some bizarre electrical demon which will turn on the AC sometimes by itself, the right hand side of the car wont lock, the rear passenger door cant be opened from the inside, the drivers door wont unlock remotely.

On top of all that Ive had the emissions sensor lamp on for maybe 5 months, I had it scanned but VW said they couldn't work out the fault? So Ive left it.

And then finally this morning on the way to work the oil pressure lamp and dash waring were coming on for a minute or two, then turning off and then on then off, repeating for a little while before going back to normal.

I don't have the money to just book the car into a dealer and say fix it.

Anyone have any ideas what could be going wrong?

    Thanks in advance

    Ben

Well thanks for the overwhelming response!

Maybe I should have had my girlfriend ask the question to get a response.

Sounds like it may have a loose earth somewhere.

Sounds like you take good care of the car. I suggest throwing matches at it.

Be a waste of a perfectly good match. Car is the biggest piece of crap I've ever owned.

Where abouts in Sydney are you?. I'm happy to scan the car properly and have a look at it. There are some problems on these that are easily fixed and yet somehow(don't start me ) not obvious to the VW mechanics unless you strike someone who takes a bit of pride in their work.
They go pretty well usually so somethings just not right.

                Hey,
Thanks for that! I live in Paddington, but I work on the Northern Beaches.
The car has been through two VW dealerships, when I've explained the problems to them, they've looked at me like I was retarded. As the main problem (the intermittent power loss) doesn't happen all the time, Murphy's Law would suggest that the car behaves perfectly when it is in the hands of the mechanics. Their scans have shown no fault, and the car has been serviced regularly. Ive elected not to address the other issues (emissions sensor, and the doors that won't lock or open) as I'm tight with money at the moment saving for a trip and they don't really affect the day to day running of the car.
When the car is working, its great to drive, handles well and is a lot of fun... but my frustration with the laundry list of things that keep going wrong is seriously undermining the enjoyment we get from it, and frankly at this point I wish everyday that someone will steal the thing and run it off a cliff.
Any help you can offer will be gratefully accepted! We would be stoked to get the car running how its meant to.
                Regards
                Ben

Suggest you find a good independant specialist. There's a few in Sydney. Parso knows a little bit about them ;-p

                      There's a recommendations section/thread.

It's been 20 years since I lived in the Eastern Subs (Randwick) but VW Village at Kensington, Wolfsburg Motors at St.Peters/Newton (??) spring to mind.
There are a few on the North Shore - look in the recomendations section.

I'd recomend you make it quite clear that you want a diagnosis & price estimate with an upper price limit on the diagnosis & a call before any work is carried out.

None of it will be cheap - you're looking at ~$120/hr & bank on a couple of hours for diagnosis & an hour for each problem (that's what it seems to average out at). Then again, it's really nice driving a car where everything works properly.
