  • XR6T to Golf TDI

After reading 'cogdoc' thread of going from a XR8 to a Golf I thought that I would add my thoughts. I am trading in on a Golf the XR6 Turbo, these cars are fast in fact the XR6T will leave behind the XR8 until about 200klm/hr. When passing on the open road, put your foot to the floor at 90ks and by the time you pass the other vehicle you will being traveling above the speed limit by at least 40ks. The fuel usage is about 50 liters /100 at that speed. Tyres lasted 30k . no ground clearance over speed bumps etc. When I test drove the Golf, Peugeot and Mondeo I though that these would feel like a pedal car after the XR6T. But I was surprised that the amount of pull that these motors have ...The Peugeot and the Mondeo have the same engine [ 2 lt diesel ] . The Golf has the same size motor put is tuned to produce more go from take off. The Golf suits me best. I am looking forward to the savings on the oiler. I think that the big bangers have been superseded by modern technology.

I changed from a modified XR5 Turbo, and while I do miss some things about the car (especially the sound), they are quickly forgotten every time I fill up and realise I have just traveled an extra 350km further than the XR5 would have on the same amount of fuel. Coming from an XR6T, you should cut your fuel bill by about 60%, and probably still have more fun on the twisty stuff.

Hey, great to hear I've helped save someone else from a Ford !

            Hooray for us!

By the way Les it was a "healthy" BA GT, and I still don't miss it. ESPECIALLY happy about the freedom I now feel as I am simply driving everywhere, and it's both better on the environmant, and on my wallet. I'm continually stoked about the computer always telling me I have hundreds of km's to go, and I leave that on the display most of the time. Logzy, that alone will blow your mind a lot too. I just feel so "free", it's amazing. Anyone coming from a thirsty car will be wrapped.

Being 2 weeks in now, I'd have to say the traffic light grand prix is no longer my domain in the manual diesel, but I'm still holding back on the full bore axle tramp takeoff. I've lost a few drags now, and after the V8, that's a new feeling.

But in the hills, corners, anything other than flat and straight, I've been carving it up. Can't wait to get my diesel sticker from the USA, so I can really rub it in.

I agree the XR6T is a sleeper for what it is, but the weight of the bigger cars is such a disadvantage, and having come from that, I use it against the bigger cars where it hurts. You'll love it!

I'd have to rate this car as both the most sensible economic with maximum fun decision I've ever made.

and I for one am looking forward to hearing your thoughts about the DSG diesel takeoff at the lights from a fellow v8 head. I think it'll be a good thing!

Still, I'm enjoying actually driving my car after 7 years of slushboxes.

droppage of clutch and burnage of tyres is the way to go with diesel launch

I currently own an FPV GT-P producing 375KW.

On a spirited drive, it gulps down an instantaneous 99.9L/100 of BP Ultimate.

I love the car, and the sound of the after-market exhaust is virtually unmatched.

To top it off, the standard, factory fitted 6 piston Brembos are just phenomenal.

I wont compare it to a Golf because it has different applications, for example, there is no way you can comfortably sit 5 adults in a Golf.

However, I do recognise the technical brilliance of a small Euro performance car, and hence I'm currently looking to buy an S3 or GTI to sit along side the GT-P in the garage.

                    Mine's still too new Misch...but it'll happen.

Gareth, I of all people understand, but I just don't need a big V8 anymore. I've found the switch from an 8 to a TDI quite painless, and for me, better than expected.

Good for you if you want both.

I considered a S3 for the missus, but in the end we settled on the GTI. Either would look sweet alongside your GT-P! My old man in law has a BA GT, but I'm trying to convince him to get into a S3 or R32.

LOL Pinz. Its my comapny car, and yet I have to catch a bus/train to work. the missus uses it to run the kids to school and go shopping.

Ive always preferred a smaller car (recently sold my BMW 325is motorsport) and hence will probably use the S3/GTI for myself. the bigger FPV is more for large family outings etc

No, I didn't see that one...

I've got the typical yank "got diesel?" on it's way, but I'll only put "diesel" on the back. Any cool "rub it in your face" diesel stickers around?
