Rear door won't lock

  • Rear door won't lock

The left rear passenger door on my MK5 Golf won't lock.

I can hear the lock in the door click but said click is not as loud as other doors.

The fact the door still clicks makes me think I may not need a complete new mechanism but that's what my mechanic says I need (even though he hasn't even taken door trim off).

Do people think this is something I could try fixing myself at home?

edit: Found video on removing front door trim. Not sure if rear door is same procedure.

You should be cheering it won't lock, as opposed to not unlocking, which is much more fun to repair But it's a typical mk5 trait, and yes you will most likely need to replace the door lock.

You take off the outer door skin to fit the lock not the inner as in the video... get a lock mate before it jams up...VDUB...

Please do, mine went from very intermittent to full lock without warning. After that I choose the dealer route $$$.

              Hi all,

Thought I'd update the thread in case it helps anybody else.

Despite two different repairers telling me I had no choice but to buy new internal mechanisms to fix this, I've discovered a hole covered with a rubber grommet (I've attached a pic).

Whenever the rear door doesn't lock if I push in with my key onto a red cap in there it fixes the problem for a few days.

So it's not a permanent fix but now I know I'm on the right track. My feeling is that whatever that red cap is at the end of is over extending so pushing it lightly back fixes things for a while.

Am thinking of putting something on the inside of the rubber grommet to stop the the over extension.

Hey mate the 'red cap' is actually a lever for the lock. If you can access this then chances are someone has left the plastic gaurd off the lock.
By you pushing it doesnt change the fact that the lock itself is gone and requires replacement. You are better off changing it while the door still opens. If you waut and the lock sticks in the locked position then you may have quiet a struggle to get the door open to replace it.

You can buy the lock motor assembly online for about $150. I had rear right replaced recently.

I had an intermittant fault on the 08 Occy (MK5 Golf) My problem was that the door would be fine for a while and then lock and not open for up to 2 months at a time.
I had to replace the lock mechanism. You can get aftermarket items off ebay now for about $75 + pp.

The procedure to replace the lock is not that hard once you figure it out. The stealership quoted me $600+gst for replacement and fitment.

If the rear door is the same as the occy im happy to offer advice if you need it.

                    Cheers

Thanks Jason, $75 + pp sounds more like it, otherwise I can live with occasionally pressing my key through the hole especially as I'm looking at trading in for a newer Golf sometime in near future.

Yes mine is the same as yours (MK5 Golf). A link to the correct unit on eBay would be great and any advice would be greatly appreciated

                      cheers

Had same issue, replaced with new incl labour for $230 Golf City Clayton last weekend.
Rear passenger side, as mentioned the outer skin was removed and it took them about half an hour total.

Diagnostic check using VCDS (VAG-COM Diagnostic System) should confirm whether the door lock has an electrical malfunction. If it does, it will require replacement. If it doesn't, there will be a mechanical issue somewhere. It could be an internal mechanical component within the door lock unit requiring freeing up with some spray lubricant, if it's accessible. Whether you try to resolve this issue yourself depends on many factors, but giving it to a non-dealer Volkswagen-Audi-Skoda specialist would probably be the best way forward.

If its a wiring issue then obviously repair the wiring. However if the issue is in the lock unit whether it be mechanical or electrical the unit requires replacing as no spare parts are available for repair.
