  • embarrassing- sill plates

okay before anyone starts laughing, i'll preface this with- i'm not a car head (although i'm getting there!)...

bought some sill plates (or scuff plates) off ebay.
and i guess it's idiot proof in terms of installation- double sided tape.

    but ermm..
where are they supposed to fit? in terms of the back doors.. i have 2 full length ones and 2 half length ones...

does anyone have these plates fitted stock? i don't know if they belong in the middle, towards the back... and i don't actually know where they're supposed to fit.. like there are so many places they can go.

how embarrassing. but there it goes. i need help!

    Hey man,

    Good on you for asking!

It's how you learn, and sure beats my method of do it yourself, break it, buy another, ask, kick yourself.

Easiest way is Google. Select "images". Seach on "scuff plates". Small ones for the rear doors, middle is usually the go both front and rear.

Clean the metal down with metho or better prepsol before you stick them down.

Hope they are designed for a VW as the car has pretty tiny sills!

i still don't know where they sit!
and unfortunately they don't sit perfect- just a little off. i'll have to hope that the doublesided tape does wonders and holds it all in...

      thanks cogdoc!

I have the sills for my car as well. I strongly suggst you strip the double sided tape off them and buy a high quality brand to replace them as the DS tape supplied is absolute s**t.

If you touch them wrong with your foot, they just come unstuck and jangle everywhere. I am at the point where I am about to replace the tape as I kick them off at least once a week.

Also, with the rear ones, you just put them where they will fit best. I couldn't get mine to stick down so I left them off for now.

With the front ones, you put them on the plastic door sill above the stickered ones already present, not on them (I'm going off a MY08 model) I aligned them where the plastic overlaps itself. Look at the plastic door sill and you will see what I mean.

          Hope that helps.

You just have to be (slightly) creative, then you can type in ****, cr@p, bast@rd, bugg*r and whatever other expletives you need to get your message across. I'm on another (UK) forum where if you type in "Renault" or "Citroen" it gets changed to "french filth"

                  Hey all,

I just bought a set of these stainless steel sill plates for the Golf as well and I thought it might be a good idea if I warn the rest of you that these ones http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....B:EOIBSA:AU:31 don't fit the GT Sport TDI. The sill where they are supposed to fit (according to the seller and there application diagrams) is only around 3cm wide where the actual plates that were sent are 5cm wide. I would be interested to see if anyone else has purchased these and if so how did they go with fitting. In the advert there is a "url" to click on to see if your vehicle is listed as them fitting and it takes you to the carsales.com.au site with the full list of VW Golf models. Unfortunately, unless I am sadly mistaken I cannot see them fitting any of the later model Golf's unless they have a flat sill at least 5cm wide to attach them to. I'm a bit pi$$ed off actually because it cost $15 for postage and even with a refund I won't see that back.

I'd send them back, IMHO they cheapen the Golf and they look hideous, that rubber trim around the outside edge just looks so cheap and nasty as does the golf lettering. There are much nicer ones out there that fit properly and for around the same dollars.

Also take a look at places like oempl.us and parts4euro.com as they sell this sort of accessory (will be more expensive but will fit properly).

                        Russ,
Sorry but those ones look ****house.
I got these ones (but not from that seller) and they look terrific and fit well too.
I stuck them on with silicone.

Apologies, when you PM'd me i should have asked what ones you were thinking of buying.
Bite the bullet, send them back, loose the $15 and buy a different set.
Annoying i know and youre right, those ones you got do not look like they are for a MK5 at all.

                        Cheers.

                          Hey Logzy,

That's alright mate it's not your fault, after seeing the ones you bought I have to agree that the ones I ended up with look pretty crappy. I will probably go for a set of those when the guy gets around to refunding my money. Thanks for that.

                          Cheers Russ

Thanks for that Maverick, I will probably go for the one's Logzy has put me on to they look pretty good. It really annoys me though with some of these clowns on eBay because as I said in my first post the seller advertises them as fitting all the Mark V Golf's and I seriously doubt if they would. Hopefully anyone else on the forums considering buying a set will read this and save themselves the trouble.

                            Cheers

I'm pleased you said that. I bought a rear scuff plate and it's coming off already. I thought I'd done something wrong. I'll pull it off and replace it with something decent. I used white spirit to clean the area - is that okay?
