Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Most Useless Function

Now that I have finally gotten my R32 and am starting to enjoy it I am reading through the hundreds of pages of manuals.

It strikes me that although the R32 (with DSG) is a technical marvell there are some functions that even to a gadget freak like me go a little overboard.

So far my award for most useless feature is a toss up between . . .

    1. The headlights automatically going on in daytime if you exceed 140km/h;

    or

    2. The fresh air vents going into recirculation mode when the windscreen washers are on so that you don't get the smell of detergent in the car.

The first one is usless in Australia (at least officially ) and the second one looks like something some ambitious German built their career around.

Anyway has anyone else got a nomination for the most useless function on their car.

    Cheers

    Steve

Don't forget that in reverse it also goes into recirculation.

BTW, I get the smell of the washer detergent all the time! So, I guess that qualifies as 'useless'!

haha i remember the dealer showing the reverse cycle thing....

"and it stops the smell of detergent going in the car"

as a big woft of detergent fills that car

The Mk3 "automatically" darkens the front rims to a 'Shadow Chrome' look

... also it auto tints the rear window...

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Oh, come on! It was bad enough with the "What really annoys you about your gti?" thread, and now this?!? Are you going to be driving around above 140km/h all day? The engineering in VW's climate control is second to none - better than any other brand out there!

I'm sorry, but there is nothing useless in our GTI!

              Winter button.
All it ever did was upset Clarkson.

agreed on the winter button... i mean occasionally its useful when theres ice/snow on the roads in sydney but most of the time its pretty useless. also the centre vent thing on the dash, what the hell is it supposed to cool/heat?

It's been 1000 degrees for ages here in Adelaide - the W button would look better as TPM or similar.

Actually these threads are fun - we have so little to moan about, that things sometimes appear more major than they really should be. As long as no one loses an eye...

It's on the TSI engines only IIRC.
