Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

would you recommend the guys you went to? i don't want the sideskirts so do you think it'd be less than $1000?
Thanks, yes she's quite a good looking dub now. I'm still waiting to hear from them about the texture issue, and considering I still haven't paid them for it, you'd reckon they'd be chasing me up, but no, not a single call. I've actually had to call them and leave a message, and they still haven't gotten back to me.

I'm not going to make a big song and dance about it though, because they have generally been quite helpful (if a little incompetent) and very reasonable on the pricing front. Considering that some VW dealers aren't the slightest bit interested in helping out with work of this kind (and if they are they charge a fortune), I can't complain too much. I'll just see if they are prepared to do me some floor mats and a dash mat at a good price to appease me.

It's hard to say what the price would be as the salesman was "looking after me" (though I'm sure they all use that line with alarming regularity) because I bought the car from him. If you are just getting the front lip and rear bumper done though, you shouldn't pay more than $400.

dang! i definitely don't want the whole thing coloured...
    now i'm sad
If you don't get the 2 piece Gti style rear bumper, then the painters would have to emulate the division and mask off the area to be left unpainted, and I'm not sure how this would turn out, but my guess is that it would look a bit cheap. The exhaust issue shouldn't be too much of a problem, it would just mean getting a twin exhaust tip fitted.

      No worries.

And I recommend following orsegtsport's advice in regards to the GTI rear bumper, it will cost you a few more beans up front, but you know the saying, the quality will be remembered long after the price is forgotten. Also, the bits can be pre-painted allowing you to keep using your car, and if you really felt up to it, you could probably do the install yourself, which would be kind of cool.

hmmm okay, so basically i'm looking at
        -gti rear bumper
-twin exhaust (does this mean that i actually have to get my exhaust changed or are we talking about a 'fake' 2nd exhaust.. i have ZERO experience with cars!)
        -colour coding

gosh. shopping for the dub really adds up!

Can anyone confirm that the rear wheel arch liners are different on the GTI?

I remember reading that the last screw holes may not line up if you don't change them - the GTI liners are a different shape where the arch meets the lower bumper(?).

en13, you don't need a new exhaust system, you just need to run twin exhausts from the rear muffler, which is about the last 25 cm (on a GT Sport at least) of the exhaust system. It will probably cost you about $70 - $100 (pure speculation) to have a couple of 2.5" tips welded on there.

I wouldn't worry about the second exhaust being a "fake" either, because we GT Sport and Gti owners are running a fake twin system anyway. Technically, 80% of the cars you see with twin sytems are running a fake second exhaust. I'm no mechanic, but it seems reasonable to assume that unless a car has a V motor (and therefore two exhaust manifolds), it doesn't have (or need) a real twin system. So, the second exhaust you see is for nothing more than aesthetics.

BarneyBoy, I'm not sure about the rear wheel arch liners to be honest, but as far as I'm aware, the Gti rear bumper fitted straight onto my car without issue.

^ If you had no issues, then I shouldn't either - thanks for the reply.
I'd much rather get this sort of info from an owner than a dealer or a crash repairer!

wow thanks for that. i'll let my mech know and see if he can do the exhaust stuff with the change of GTI bumper but i'll have to still look around for someone to do my colour coding...
