Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Colour Coding- price, location, TDI?

    hi guys,

anyone done colour coding in WA? I have a TDI, just wondering if it's hefty... there's another thread floating around that says the average price is 700.. but there's nothing from WA?

also, does anyone know if this affects insurance?

i don't know anything about colour coding, is it only the side, front and the back that gets colour coded? do they change the material from plastic to metal or is it just coloured?
and are the handles in the deal too?

    i've a united grey TDI...

i love the colour coding some guys have done here, it's absolutely gorgeous.

you can colour code whatever you want but all it is is colour coding, no parts are exchanged. imo it looks silly to get the front and rear bumpers done without the side strips and door handles being done if you have a c-line. its all about how much you want to pay. remember panel beaters are always negotiable and if you go to one that has euro cars they might have someone doing another UG golf and you could possibly get it cheaper, just a thought

      thanks mischa.
has anyone done it on a comfortline before? all the ones i've seen are GTIs... of course, if i were to do it i'd get the whole thing

just that the GTIs look like the back bits have changed though... it looks metal...

the top half of your bumper thats painted is actually plastic too. they either sand down the plastic or apply a filler primer and hten sand that back to acheive that look. my friend had it done on his silver c-line and it looked good.

seriously? i never knew that. i'll have to look at it closely now.
it'd look like a GT sport if it's colour coded right?

i'm just trying to picture it..

does anyone know about insurance claims? is this considered a modification to the car and will it affect my premium?

Here's some reading for you (second link especially):
Apologies for the self-indulgent thread, but I get asked questions about our colour coding a fair bit, so I guess having a thread here for myself and others to share their experiences and so on should be a good reference point. Our GTI was colour coded by David Smash Repairs in Queanbeyan. We...

WooHoo .. it's finally here. 5dr, DSG, Leather, PDC, Tint, Colour Coded. (a few mods waiting to be installed). Sorry best pictures I have at the moment ... been so busy only done 40kms in it .. can't wait for the weekend !!! - M -

neither the gt sport nor the gti are colour coded. the gt sport is the same as the c-line except wiht a cutout to fit the twin exhaust pipes. only the r32 comes standard colour coded unfortunately.

I'm in W.A, and had my GT Sport colour coded at the dealership (John Hughes) a few weeks back: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=13541

As you can see, I actually got the Gti side skirts and rear bumper put on too. I think the Gti rear bumper is essential because it comprises two sections, which means the upper section can be painted and the lower section left black. Having the entire rear bumper painted is a bit too much imo. And you would definitely want to get the door handles done, as I've seen a colour coded Golf with the door handles left black, and it wasn't cutting the mustard.

Of course, when you get the colour coding done, you will be needing some new rims to finish it off, and I reckon some GT Sport BBS Classix would be just perfect. Seriously though, I am looking to sell my rims so I can upgrade to 18's, so if anyone's interested let me know.

the panel beater will have to colour match and remove the part.

i got a quote for front bumper, $380 prime and paint and $80 to take it off and put it on the car.

reasonable price would be $420 to $550.

if its excessive it means its too fiddly and they really dont want to bother with such a small job.

oooo!! it looks great! and it's united grey too so i can actually see what it'd look like. sounds like they didn't do too good with the texture- did you get that sorted out?
would you recommend the guys you went to? i don't want the sideskirts so do you think it'd be less than $1000?

moguzhan, what state are you in?

and thank you minigolf, that was awesome reading, i think i'll have to join that forum so i can ask that guy about his CW coding and where he got it from! that looked like the ozzy park dealership...

Why do they leave the bumpers unpainted in the first place? Is there a proper reason or is it just to make the R32 different from other Golfs?

remember that you dont have the twin exhaust tips so if you get a gti bumper there'll be a hole there

It should have been an option. The edition 30s come coded.
I had new panels long before my GTI turned up so as to get my car done as soon as it turned up!

In one of the posted links he said 'Zarbs, it's the VW dealers main recommended shop'. He also said they didn't prepare the surface properly and he had to have it redone.
