  • MK5 GTI Battery Issue

    Hi All

So I have a battery problem and it has all started since getting it back from the crash repairers about 12 months ago. Last year I was driving it 1-2ce a week and I noticed that when I hadn't driven it for 2 weeks it wouldn't click over straight away (.5-1 second delay) other times when I had driven it 3-4 times a week it would start straight away.

Battery was replaced with a brand new VW battery in March 2013.

The last time I drove it was on the 1st November 2013, I then went away on an extended overseas trip until the 5th January 2014. I tried starting it the other day and it was completely dead, the heads up display barely came on. Now that is not normal I assume? When I had my factory battery in there back in 2008, I went overseas for 3 months came back and the car started... Not sure what is going on!??!

The crash was only the front of my car, one thing that the repairer's did was replace my HID's with a new kit. I had the HID's hooked up to the battery via a relay so it drew power from there when igniting. The repairer's have done it differently and simply installed that kit into the headlights as a 'Plug and Play' kit. Could this be it? Or do batteries discharge over 8 weeks?

    Thanks

    Remi

Have you by chance upgraded the head unit (Stereo) to a later model touch screen one?

Its pretty normal for a battery to discharge if it has been left connected. If youre going to be away for an extended period its best to disconnect the battery.

I have installed a RCD-510; however, the CAN was upgraded and the battery lasts more than a week but just seemed strange for it to be dead after 6

battery will be under warranty won't it?

I was told you lose 1% of charge per day on a standing battery - could be BS.

First thing is to charge your battery then go have it tested for strength at an Auto parts store or where you bought it. If it's on its way out get it replaced, should have 24 mth warranty

If after all that you still have fast discharge issues, then get the repair shop to investigate

I have had it checked while I was getting my car serviced, the Service Centre said that they had found that there was a constant drain on the battery after the systems had gone to sleep (45 mins). To determine what it was they would need to keep the car for 24 hours and it would cost me $500 to investigate, minus any additional charge to fix it. I decided against this because I thought that was outrageous.

One thing poped into my mind, as mentioned I upgraded the CAN gateway and my stereo to a RCD 510. I remember when I upgraded my CAN Gateway, there were two errors that remained, one was a Alarm horn communication error, which VW told me was standard and did not need to be fixed as the alarm worked perfectly and another one was 61-Battery Regulator which I could not get rid of, but Ross-Tech told me was coming up because the newer cars have a battery regulator; however, mine may not have that module. Now I am wondering if that is correct?

Could this be why my car is draining, because incorrect battery information has been entered into the CAN gateway and it cant find the battery?

                I have a 2005 Golf GTI.

                Thanks guys!

These are the last two errors:

Hey mate.. yes that is a possibility.

Your car does not have a battery monitor. Therfore the gateway MAY be looking for info and not putting the network to sleep.

Cannot say for sure as I have not come across a vehicle incorrectly coded in this manor.
Either way definitely your coding has to be redone correctly then rechecking of the current draw

I have bought a multi-meter and will investigate the current draw from each fuse over the weekend, I assume is there is anything drawing something then that is the culprit?

                    Thanks!
