Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

r32 aircon takes a while to get cold?

    My R32 is the same. Works best when switched to Auto for the 1st 10mins.
    Prev 2008 R32 3 door DSG.
    Prev 2010 S3 Sportback Stronic.
    Now Lexus IS350 F Sport

      In the Mk6 at least one of the common brands of a/c compressor is Sanden (Japanese)... I think some production is no longer in Japan but it's reasonable so expect that the engineering itself would be half decent...

      Funnily enough when the a/c works as it should it can get the car quite cold - it still can but there is a delay of a couple of minutes before it begins cooling... It's as if there's a delay in the switch itself...

        Yep, got the same problem with my R32 also.
        Seems to take quite a while to cool down, and even in winter, in demister mode, it fogs up the windscreen something chronic.
        It also seems like when the car is idle at traffic lights, the AC is ineffective. Takes quite a while to cool down, and on hot days (36+) it doesn't even cool at all.

        I've just purchased a new control valve for my compressor which is a Sanden PXE 16 with the circlip. Cost around $70 inc postage from China. Unfortunately it requires an AC place to do it, as you need to be licensed to evacuate and recharge AC systems.

        Once the system is discharged, it should be easy enough to replace the valve, as it's just a wiring loom plug, circilp and maybe some compressor oil. The compressor doesn't even need to be removed. When I took it to an AC place, they diagnosed it as 'lazy compressor' and the shop did suggest changing the valve. I'll post back when I get it changed to see if it makes any difference.

            I've just had my whole AC system replaced in my 08 GTI at the dealer with the latest OEM parts - it takes less than a minute to start blowing cool air. I don't remember it being any slower before the original parts malfunctioned though.

              So I took the car to a local ac shop. Told them what the problem was and gave them the rcv. Guy said they'll diagnose first before replacing it as it may not be it. It turns out that it was the valve. Got a/c now.

              I think there's a link somewhere here courtesy of eek.

                Bear in mind there are two types of valve for the PXE16 Compressor... One that bolts in and one that is held by a circlip...

                Easy enough to check before buying..

                  My mk5 jetta does the same thing... So the valve replacement did the trick to fix the slow cooling a/c?

                    Yes, for mine anyway. I'd say get it checked out first. The valve that I got was a bit bigger than the eom but still fit. This fix is much cheaper than replacing the whole compressor kit. Your a/c shop should re-gas first to check if there's no leak first.

                      It depends really as mine actually had a dead compressor. You just need to get it inspected and any reputable shop will tell you the truth.
