Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • r32 aircon takes a while to get cold?

    hi there,

Please let me know if there's a thread for this.
I'm looking at an R32 and the owner was upfront that the ac takes a while to get cool.
Is this a common issue that can be fixed by re-gas or is it a sign the compressor is about to go?
Is the dealer the best place to take it for diagnosis or will car aircon shops do? How much is a new compressor to source and install as a worst case scenario?

Thanks and Merry Christmas to all!

should be cooling within 30seconds, and be maximum cool in under 10 minutes.

Strangley, every R32 Ive worked on has been slow to cool.

Thanks, sounds like its a common thing for r32s then. So a re-gas won't do any good then?

My mkv gti is the same, particularly on hot days it can take a long time to cool and often doesnt feel overly cold. At first I was worried the compressor might have been on its way out but its always been like this and hasnt got anyway worse in the 4yrs ive owned it so I just put up with it.

          Interesting

I recently bought an R32 and had the very same issue. Had it re-gassed last week at Barloworld and it made no difference.

Hope there is a remedy as it's unbearable on hot days

The owner did say it's always been like that. Wow, very interesting indeed. I would've have thought/expected the AC should do what's it mean to do, make the car cold Might be asking too much I suppose

Mine has developed this delay too - seems to be quite common.

Could be as simple as a Refrigerant Control Valve (RCV) if you have a certain brand of compressor...

Thanks, it might be the valve. From what I read it's not something that vw will sell you as they'll only the whole compressor unit. The valve itself is around $70 but replacing it is a big job. I wonder if local ac shops do this.

Like I said I'm in the same boat. I might try getting the valve after I confirm my compressor is the same one. Recovering the refrigerant, fitting the new valve and regassing the system is something I can't do however it shouldn't be beyond the capability of a normal airconditioning place.

Well, my A/C died completely about 2 months ago because of a dead compressor. It had all the necessary bits replaced and re-gassed and it made little difference to how quickly it cooled the car. It behaves exactly the same as the other comments in this thread - 3-4mins to start blowing cold air of any significance and then the car is down to temp. within about 10-15mins.

The whole system seems to be very Zen, using as little effort as possible to still appear to be doing something. It is the polar opposite of my Mazda which produces arctic air within 30 seconds of starting the car.

When I got my Mk5 GTI last year the A/C would be ice cold in as little as 30 seconds and be great. But recently (1-2 months or so) it has developed this same issue that everyone else is having. At first I was thinking it was out of gas, but since people have had theirs regassed and it hasn't done anything. This worries me.

This has been a drawback of Euro cars in general for a long time — probably because their countries of origin don't get all that hot, so aircon is somewhat of an afterthought.

My Mk 6 TDI took 'til forever to cool on a hot day, and even longer ( up to 12kM) to start getting warm on a cold one.

My current Mk 7 TDI seems much better — still not quite up to Jap standards, but much improved in the A/C department.
