  • Optimum way to drive a TDI

    Hey guys,

So I've been driving my 2006 TDI for a month or so, being my first turbo AND diesel, I was wondering what exactly is the most optimum way to drive it? Ie. ideal rev's for gear changes etc. Fuel economy and the general health of the vehicle is important.

Also, I've been noticing a bit of a weird stutter and some blackish smoke just after the 2k rev mark - is this normal?

    Thanks in advance

Sorry, I only just noticed there was a dedicated diesel section.

      Hey

I found it took me six week to get used to mine.

I always try and keep the tacho around the start of peak torque, which is about 1700rpm. Then always shift befor that drops off, so around 3000rpm

Don't stand on it while it's off boost, as it dumps fuel before the boot kicks in and clean lead to long term clogging up of un burnt fuel.

Also I find that when moving away, push in the throttle and just hold it there, let the urbo do the work to get you up to speed as you drive off. And don't mash the pedal until you your past that first peak torque range, 1700rpm.

Even when cruising, it's best no to let it labout under the 1500rpm mark as well.

      Hope that helps

I'm guessing you've got a manual transmission and not auto/DSG??

          Yep

Though the same applies if you have it in manual/paddle mode

Optimum way to drive a TDI

I was actually referring to the OP as he has not said what transmission he has

Just with a DSG you may want to also avoid creeping in slow moving traffic.

My vRS is my first diesel also.
I've found that, similar to petrol cars I've owned, driving in a forward direction is the optimal way to drive

But seriously, benough's tips re riding the torque wave is the way to go.

The best fun is had above 2500rpm with a straight pipe. All the noise... All the soot.

Jokes... This is my third diesel, first TDI (VAG) and even coming from diesel Nissan's, its a different car to drive. Torque curves are they way of the economically conscious
