Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

That was the point I was getting at!! got carried away that I forgot to write it in.

For that reason I dont go to ANY independant fuel stations anymore.

The engine seemed to run smoother when switching to 98, but I didn't notice a difference in power.
I know your pain mrx. I too was given the GTI with a full tank of 95. Disgraceful. I was in shock......I wonder if VAG know they are doing it.

Lets just say I have nothing further to do with that dealership, particularly after a couple of warranty issues. I have found the other guys much better to deal with.

My dad used to use 91 in his merc, he then switched it to 95 (recommended) and there was a noticeable power increase and increased economy

I've only ever run 98 in my GTI and am making my way around all the brands slowly. For the price difference I would not run 91

I usually buy Shell - it's just convenience - and haven't noticed any difference between 98 and 95 (the TSI is supposed to use 98 ). At a pinch you can use regular ULP, but I haven't ever had the need (or the guts) to. If the 95 was more easily available than it is, I'd probably only use that.

Filling up at a diesel pump and behind me was a maserati going for 91 (he had no choice as shell did not have any other RON unleaded available at the time)

You are only limited by the amount of advance in the timing of your car really with lower RON fuels.

I would only use the recommended octane rating (or above) and if I had to put a lower grade in, would certainly not rev the car.

I wouldn't want the computer to 'learn' the worse fuel and adjust, because the only way it's learning is from the sensors being tripped.

The octane definitely makes a difference in a tuned engine (especially if you have been chipped) and any pinging or pre-detonation is to be avoided, not just prelonged use.
