I only ever use BP Ultimate but just wondering if anyone uses regular unleaded and if they have found any difference using the lower octane fuel?

have never used anything other than 98 octane in our polo gti.
I have a forester 2.5T that they recommend only 98 octane but had to use 95 when in tas... didn't notice a difference as was in cruise mode on holiday not thrashing it. but not recommended to go down to 92.
I have used both 92 and 98 octane in an ss commodore i had and you could notice the difference in performance and fuel economy in that.1974 1300 Beetle, 1997 Golf GL, 2003 New Beetle Cabrio, 2014 Audi A4 quattro

I wouldn't be putting regular unleaded in there! 95 is apparently the minimum, and also not recommended if it can be avoided. My car was delivered with 95, because of the tight arse dealer only having a contract with a company which doesn't have 98. The engine seemed to run smoother when switching to 98, but I didn't notice a difference in power.

Its not gonna hurt it for an occasional tank, My R1 was premium only, but obviously as Premium isnt readily available in all locations, they need to be able to handle lower grade fuel too.currrently... MY10 GTI | DSG | Candy White | Sunroof | 18's | BT | MDI

I currently have a VXII Clubsport and only used BP Ultimate.
However the last 2 fills have been United Premium 95 octane with the 10% Ethanol.
Car runs really well on it and its 20 cents per litre cheaper than regular unleaded from other servos.
I must say though, i am trading the clubby so dont really care about whether the E10 is good for it or not.
Could be worth looking into this for your GTI's providing the E10 is 100% ok for it. Do your homework first.!!

United also do a 100 Octane.
Off topic i know, but when i get my GT Sport i will only use BP Diesel being the lowest sulphur content available of 10ppmLast edited by Guest; 20-02-2008, 05:23 PM.

To my knowledge, lower octane fuel will probably preignite and cause "pinging", a rattle sound, but only when you get up it and the timing advances and the boost causes combustion ratio's to rise. If you drive it normally, guess you'll be fine. Pinging is only a problem if you continue to do it repeatedly, for eventually you may burn a hole through your pistons. You'd have to really try and do that though....
I sometimes have to run lower octane fuel in various toys, and all it does is cause a problem if I get up it.
What is interesting is it doesn't take a lot of a lower grade left in a tank to "spoil" a higher octane rating and still cause some pinging.2014 Skoda Yeti TDI Outdoor 4x4 | Audi Q3 CFGC repower | Darkside tune and Race Cams | Darkside dump pDPF | Wagner Comp IC | Snow Water Meth | Bilstein B6 H&R springs | Rays Homura 2x7 18 x 8" 255 Potenza Sports | Golf R subframe | Superpro sways and bushings | 034 engine mounts | MK6 GTI brakes |

Only ever used PULP in the Alfa but a mate who bought a 156 and is not, should we say, very car savvy. Not someone to read a manual, he had only been using regular for the 2 or 3 years he had the car, when we had this conversation. The motor seemed fine, and is basically the same as the 2.0 twin spark in my car (a 147).
That said, only PULP will be going in the R32. gpk, your mate must be a nutter - all those cars and he can't stump for PULP? Is he mental?R32 - Black, 3 door, DSG, sunroof, Pioneer AVIC HD3

As far as I know regular unleaded at Shell servos is now 95 RON. Well it around my area anyway.
As to the quality of Shell fuel, well lets not open that can of works again.sigpic

I understand that the GTi computer will actually adjust and "down tune" when a lower octane fuel is used.
I'm not willing to try it...
When I was 18 and Woolworths first came out with their new fuel stations I filled up my Suzuki Swift GTi with their fuel. My GTi was running Group A cams, 2 inch exhaust, chip (amongst other mods) and revved to 9500 RPM (and loved it). The car lasted about 50 k's before it wouldnt rev right and would stall at the lights. A new fuel pump and clean of the injectors later and you will never find me using anything other than PULP in a tuned car from either Shell, BP or Caltex.

I had a stock 95 Honda Civic - only 98RON in that car. 194000km and it drove like it was half its age.
And just for the shell haters, it was mostly Vpower/Optimax, the same as what goes in the GTI nowNickZ
