Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • OH HOLY CRAP !! Multiple dash error codes all at once

So, driving my Golf Mk5 tonight, all of a sudden, the dash lights go out, then it starts beeping at me with a big red STOP on the display. Then it said something about oil pressure and lots of error lights are flashing up. I pull up and turn the engine off like it tells me. The headlights are still on but the dash lights (speedo ect) are not working. I put on the hazard lights which do work but not on the dash. I check the engine to see if it still has oil and not leaking and everything appears fine. I try to start the car and it wont let me.
So the error codes that are lit up are the orange steering wheel, airbag, ABS, traction control, (!) is flashing red, red oil light. They're the ones I remember.
I left it off for a bit and tried to start it again and it started 1st go, but it's idling faster now. The red (!) is still flashing and the airbag, abs and traction lights are still on. The dash lights and blinkers are back and working. I was able to drive the car home.
The car has done 319,000 kms but always serviced every 15000 at VW dealership only. I replaced stereo with a RCD510 and had the gateway replaced to prevent the battery drain issue. I installed fog lights and HID driving lights. All of which was done ages ago.
Recently, a rear abs sensor wire had come off and needed replacing. The dealership didn't have one so they rigged it back up to keep it going.
Has anyone else experienced this or know what the hell is going on with it?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
I am meant to go from home (Bathurst) to pick up my daughter in Victoria tomorrow and bring her back, then go to Sydney on Thursday for a wedding, so I am desperate to get my car working again.
    Thanks.

You should get the car fully scanned for fault codes and looked at by a qualified mechanic, particularly if you're planning a big drive.

Sometimes what appears catastrophic because of the number of check lights on the dash can be as simple as a faulty sensor. Sometimes it is catastrophic.

First step is a full diagnostic scan.

Just wondering when you last replaced the car battery. I know the entire dash lights up when it is flat, but I've not heard of this happening while driving though. Best to check what the fault codes are as per above.

if what Ryan_R is saying is correct, perhaps it's the alternator combined with a return of the battery drain issue?

Just a quick update, I had the car in at the dealership and they reset the airbag fault, which is the only code that won't reset itself.
Since then, the car has been driving as normal with no issues. The dealership could not find any issues either.
It appears the car had one spak attack but that was it. Not bad, considering it now has 351,000 km on the clock.

I'll be happy with 351k if that is all that has gone wrong with it!.

You must be the dream customer for the dealer!
