  • 2009 Jetta depreciation - epic fail

My friend's 4 year old 130k Jetta 118DSG that cost $35,000 new just got snapped up at auction for $6700. It was undamaged, regularly serviced, immaculate condition, had the APR stage I upgrade, 17" VW alloys and drove like new. During its life it has had the typical twincharger cracked pistons requiring 2 engine replacements (under warranty) and the 7 speed DSG has had the usual mechatronics and clutch replacements. No dealer would touch it as a trade or cash buy.

Is this is the result of the recent bad press the DSG problems and twincharger engine have received then I wonder how it will affect VW products in general?

I think that many other brands resale value would be similar, maybe not as low. With more and more new cars sold every year, the price of your s/h car is going down.

Even taking into account the 130k on it I still would have expected it to sell for a bit more than that, that was at auction though. The fact dealers wouldn't touch it doesn't surprise me, I heard of a guy a while back trying to trade in a my12.5 polo gti being offered about $8k for it, and it was almost new!

The general public may be starting to become aware of what VW enthusiasts have already known for some time regarding the issues surrounding the 118TSI engine and/or the DQ200 gearbox.

If people aren't going to buy it, where does that leave the dealer? You can probably guess how that would affect the car's value.

Volkswagen demise will be due to engine failures and that crappy DSG.
If used car prices are a guide at the moment and people no longer buy them and lose money on resale I expect people to stop buying new vehicles. You would have to be a nutcase to buy new if you are aware of pitiful resale value. This is a good discussion.

twin-charger engine + 7 speed dsg = double whammy, specially with recent bad press vw has had.

It never stopped Audi sales in the past 10yrs.

Wow $6700, someone got a real steal, my brother just sold his 06 Jetta 2.0turbo 6spd dsg for 11k it was fully optioned and had 110k kms he was pretty disappointed.

The Jetta does seem to suffer from depreciation pretty hard, I think because its a bit of a niche market in Australia, its not quite a large car but not a hatch either. Also what didnt help the MKV Jetta was that vw held the same shape (exterior anyway) for 6yrs, whereas the Golf got a mid life refresh with the Mk6.

I've been following my car online since I've owned it ( 1 year ). Its a 07 5DR R32 manual with all options. Just before the whole shebang with VW in the media it was holding price around my purchase price and they were moving. Now they are fairly stagnate and are in some cases almost been discounted by 10k in private sales.

This isn't much to go by but a year ago when I bought the R32 the online number of cars on carsales was hovering around 185-190k. It's now sitting up at around 230-235k. I think in general the used car market is slow, even for enthusiast cars. I've been tracking e92 M3s for a while now and they are really not moving at all.

I did well with my Jetta.

                    Paid $35900 new on 30[Oct 2006.
2.0 FSI non turbo tiptronic, only option was Metallic Silver paint.

Did 55600 km in it,full service history.

Was immaculate prior to being written off late April 2010.

Got $25000 back for it,was extremely happy.

Personally I would not own a DSG, seems there are a few out there with the same sentiment.

We all want the reliable models, no one wants the lemon, similar situation with the new Polo GTI, trade-ins are crazily low.

On the other hand, my 2006 Polo GTI with the bullet-proof 1.8T should still be worth above 10k, but maybe i'm dreaming too...

Buyers market, you cant tell them what to buy...

                        Polo's, Jetta's,

I don't see anything unusual about the used prices for these models, they are less desirable compared to the perception people have of the Golf, Transporter, Passat.

My bro paid $12K for his 08 Jetta TDi with 90K kms 6 months ago. The same combo in a Golf was minimum $15K

without knowing what you paid for yours, this is interesting.
earlier this year, my brother who lives in melbourne, sold his black mk5 r32 3dr. 6sp man with low k's, think maybe 60k?
he paid 35k for it 3 years prior, and sold it for 33.5k. thats only a $500 drop per year.
on occassions, he was offered 32/33k by people walking up to at service stations. maybe because it was a 3dr/i don't know?
last month, my son bought an 07 mk5 gti 6sp man with 50k for 18k, so i thought the r32's were still holding their value?
