Hi there. I've come to the same conclusion and plan to make T10172 and use an Allen key for T10020. On my engine you can get easy access to the cam pulley just by taking the plastic cover off, so can have tool ready beforehand. I'd be interested to hear your comments once completed, good luck with it!

Don't need any special tools to do a belt replacement, just line up tdc and mark everything with white-out.If the marks line up again with the new belt it has to be right. Done hundreds of belts and never had a problem.

Are you referring to the BKD engine as well?

I would NEVER do a BKD or similar without locking the timing....petrol 2.0 motors etc yes but not diesels.....

All types of wv/audi belts, BKD are no harder than any other.Probably do 4-5 a week sometimes more.

We had the timing belt and water pump changed over, Canberra vw centre did a great job, timing was out slightly from whoever did the last belt which was interesting. Just have to sort out a strange hot start issue that the car sometimes has. Thanks for the offer for the help, might take you up on that sometime!

You may get it to run doing that but not very well. There was someone on this forum IIRC around 2 years ago that had someone change the cambelt on a BKD & it didn't run well. He started adjusting the cam positions & found it ran better, better economy, starting etc. He spoke to the person who had changed the belt about the 3 hex. head screws [13mm AF] & the mechanic said he never touches those. The poster then thought he had discovered something new & was going to write an article for some magazine.
If the original mechanic had done the belt change as it's supposed to be done, loosening the screws & moving the cams would have made things worse not better. I didn't know any better at the time but after researching the procedure have found that it is critical to follow the correct procedure if you want the engine to run as the designers intended.

You had better not take on changing the belts on the T4 with the ACV or AUF engines using your method. These must be set with VAG COM with consideration to duty cycle of the fuel pump to start & run properly.

In the middle of their adjustment is apparently the optimal setting, according to the workshop manual.

You MUST lock the cam(s) and crank before you adjust them.

The middle of the adjustment is only a starting point. As you said the cams & crank are locked. The screws are loosened slightly so that the belt can centralize in tension while the tensioner is set to the correct position. The counter-hold tool T10172, that I am making, applies pressure in an anticlockwise direction to facilitate this. The screws are then tightened.
This is a very simplified explanation & there is a lot more fiddling to get it spot on. Ref. myturbodiesel.com.

I have ONLY worked on VAG cars for over 25 years, and I love to read this stuff. This is great. Keep up the good work. I think aprr32 just replaces 4-5 timing belt kits per week just for fun. AND, don't you dare do a timing belt on a T4 aprr32 or whoever you are
