  • CAN Gateway Upgrade - Now nothing works!

Hi All - I have also posted this in the electrics section of the forum; however, I dont know if thats right

I am in the process of upgrading to a RCD510 on my 2005 MKV GTI and therefore also upgrading the CAN Gateway.

    Current Gateway:
    Part No: 1K0 907 530 E (1K0907530E)

New CAN Gateway I purchased off eBay:
    Part No: 7N0907530AA
    URL: VW CAN BUS Gateway RNS510 RCD510 RNS315 RNS310 7N0907530AA Latest Version | eBay

I followed the instructions on my-gti.com (CAN bus gateway removing, installing and upgrading – Volkswagen Golf | my-gti.com I took screenshots of all my current configurations and then proceeded to swap out the gateway. Once I swapped it out, I tried to re-code the new gateway; however, one of the options was missing and once I re-coded I got hundreds of errors and my fog lights no longer worked (Only thing I immediately noticed).

I used the "Installation List" to re-code the new gateway, one of the options was missing. I then went to the long coding to try and see if I could manually re-enter the long code; however, there are no options at all, everything is missing...

    Please see pictures:

The installation list needs to be correct before you attempt long coding, as VCDS needs to know what devices to show the coding options for.
What happens when you try and restore the installation list to the correct values and save?

Thanks for the reply. Yes the screen shots of the long coding are after I have set up the installation list. So I copied all the options into the installation list as they were in my old gateway and hit save and then looked at the long coding and it was as the screenshots in my post. Blank...

Re: CAN Gateway Upgrade - Now nothing works!

Ok so the installation list is now correct but just coding is wrong?
If that's the case I think you need to try and force the correct number of coding bytes.
Note you originally had 7 bytes of coding (14 digits).
Try and just add zeroes to the beginning of your current coding until you have 7 bytes worth and save. Then try and restore the correct full coding you had previously.

Thanks for the reply. In regards to the installation list: yes it is all correct apart from the 00 Steering Angle Sensor, I cannot seem to find this on the new gateway, all I have is 04: steering Angle. Is this the one?

In regards to setting the coding, do you mean putting that string in the coding list or in those individual boxes where the numbers are bright green?

As you can see from the pictures in my old CAN I had all the names appear as well with tick boxes but in the new one this doesn't appear. I read on my-gti.com that I can't use the long coding because the CAN versions are not the same

Yes looks like the address for the steering angle sensor is different in that version of gateway.

The coding doesn't appear valid for the new gateway, hence the confusion from VCDS when trying to display coding hints.

Try setting the coding to 00000000000000 and save.

Then close and open the controller again in VCDS and see if you get the correct coding hints to reapply.

Thank you for the reply - I will try doing this tomorrow...

Out of curiosity, does it matter that I have a CAN Gateway starting with 7N and not 1K?

I also tried clicking the restore original value under the Installation list and that didn't actually clear any of the settings.

I dont know compatibility off the top of my head for that part number. Would have to have someone check etka I don't have it setup at the moment.

Not sure if this will do anything, but it is using a 7N0 canbus, so who knows it might just do the trick...

Ok I think I know where the confusion might be coming from...I have not coded one of those particular gateways but I believe that the way that coding is done is slightly different.

Basically the installation and coding have been split into two separate strings. So you therefor are left with a shorter coding string because the module list has already been dealt with under the 'installation list' screen.

So make sure your installation list is 100% correct. Then you'll need to step through all the bytes in the long coding helper and manually select all the appropriate settings for you particular car.

                      Hi Kamold

I have tried to enter the above coding and it is saying "Error 22: coding rejected: conditions not correct or request sequence error"

Please note this is using a genuine ross-tech cable.

It also said that the control module is currently not configured, would i like to try the defauly values 12345,1234,12345 or would i like to leave it as is.

I said default and then it gave me that error. Even if I set it back to 00000,0000,00000 it still gives the same 22 error and I do not have the tick boxes showing up in the coding helper

                          Hi Kamold

Thank you, I did that and the list is 100% correct; however, i cannot get my rear fog lights to work and there is no option in the installation list. In the coding helper there are only three strings, all with not much information..
                          Thanks so much!

Actually, ignore that... I may have just figured it out... I needed to set RHD for the fog to work.. thats cleared that up now. I will install the RCD510 and see if any errors come up.
