Fellow MkV owners,

Maybe I'm assuming the worst, but it's best to plan for that right?

I decided at lunch today to take my car out for a drive, but when I started it up it felt very different to usual. Instead of idling at around 850-900rpm (as it's done throughout its entire life) it was sitting on about 700rpm making a burbling sound and fluctuating up and down ~100rpm. Basically it just sounded sick. I'm pretty novice with this kind of stuff so I took it out down the street to see if it was just a start-up thing, but as I was driving, whenever I took my foot off the accelerator the car would hold revs for about 1-2 seconds, slightly increase the revs, then drop off as per normal.

At this point I turned around, drove the 300m back home and let the car idle again, and it still made the burbling sound and fluctuating revs (650-900rpm @ idle).

Does anyone know what this could be caused by? The car is a 2006 MkV GTI, with 80000km, 6MT, and has had no previous faults to this. In the 30000km I've had it, it has been an absolute dream to drive.

I really don't know what this could be, and haven't had time to check out the forum/web for answers as I've gotta head back to work.

Take it to a VW specialist. Thats probably the best thing you could do at the moment. Could be any number of things: bad fuel, faulty ignition system components, faulty injectors..... anything!

PCV is gooone by the sounds of it. If you havent replaced it in the past then its a) most likely the issue, and b) a world record for lasting that long without dying in the first place.

Easy way to test is to try and take the oil cap off while the engine is running. If its really hard to remove it then the PCV is stuffed.

Mine behaved exactly like what you are describing when the PCV went.

I grabbed a new one from my local dealer for around $120. Worked out cheaper and easier than buying OS.

hmm...that is interesting...I get that every second day I start up my GT Sport...it's due for a 90000km service, might get them to look at that as well...

If that fails to be the cause it might also be worth checking the throttle body.

Ok guys!

Firstly, thanks for all the feedback so far, and even if it isn't one of the things mentioned, at least I've learnt a bit about what to look out for in the future.

Since getting back to the car I've done a few checks that have been mentioned;

- The dipstick is all the way in (and oil levels are good)
- The oil cap is relatively easy to remove when the engine is running ( Thanks Lucas, although I managed to remove the cap)

I've also spoken to one of the guys who I work with who has a Mk6 R and he thinks that it could possibly be the DV.

It looks as though I'm just going to take it in somewhere and get it checked out.

Also, I found this after a little more searching...

seems like my PCV Valve is on its way out

In the first video with the exhaust you can distinctly hear the variation in RPM for a few seconds, this is how mine sounds as long as I leave it idling.
And the engine sounds pretty much identical to that in the second video.

Looks like it's dubaddiction for a PCV first, then go from there

As for PCV, I find that if you get the whole emission service kit from ECS tuning, it should work with our cars. That includes both front and rear PCV (with gaskets). UK cars seem to fit 06F129101P okay, but need to make sure rear one is also a newer revision that finished with 'B'.

I just replaced my pcv.
I got the eurojet delete from Tim @ dubadiction $139, easy install took 10 mins

Option 2: OEM pcv from local dealer was $135
