  • First Major Issue...Air Con Compressor Gone

Well my Air Con Compressor went on the weekend..took it to get sorted today and have been told the Compressor itself is on back order and wont be here for 3 weeks or more

Lets hope its not too hot over the next month!!!

This is the first thing that has gone wrong in almost 3 years and 92,000kms so im not too dissapointed and i can still drive the car.

Can anyone tell me if the GTI Air Con setup is any different to other MkV Golfs/Jettas? 3 Weeks seems a bit of a long for a part like that Gearbox etc i could understand (might be more like 13 weeks wait!!!)

It's right up there on the list of components to fail. In fact, the last time I was at the dealership the guy who deals with the warranty returns told me it is the number 1 item to fail, which would explain the wait. I believe there's no difference between the GTI & the rest.

Yeap and that makes sense, with all the MkV Golf/Jettas on the road...would be a common component to fail. As I said, not too worried...just a pain..

          A/Con Compressors

they told me it was an issue with the first models 04/05 & some earlly 06s. VW had solved the issue the the supplier.

I had mine go at about 14000 kms-warranty covered the new one but I'm now a bit concerned that it might keep happening as so many people seem to be reporting the same prob. The dealer[Austral VW Brisbane] said that if it wasn't under warranty it would cost about $1200 to replace. How many people have had further air compressor issues after they had their first failed one replaced?

Whats the cost of new vs rebuilt compressor. Chances are the factory quote is for a brand new one.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I just got my 05 GTI back last week from a busted compressor 2 yrs 18,500kms. The dealer told me it was one of the worse case he'd seen as it also snapped the drive belt.

Yes they also said this is a common Golf MKV problem and if so why don't they bloody recall these cars rather than just wait until the compressor fails?

I booked to have it checked out but the compressor and belt died a few days beforehand.

I'd recommend anyone who has the same problem not turn on the air-con even if it sometimes work as it could snap the drive belt.

Happens in Pogos too. Just had mine replaced last week - just under 2 yrs, 24,000kms.

Maybe they were hoping, or thought, that the compressor would last 37 months.

Sounds about right for a factory quote for a compressor.
