  • Km's out of a golf tank?

    Hey all,

As a newbie here, I'm in "ask a million questions" mode, so please bear with me if this has already been answered. I did have a look back through a lot of topics though...

What I'm wanting to find out from owners is the real world mileage out of a tank. Obviously not to running out, but what's a useable range?

I'm tossing up between the hotrod GTi and the TSI or TDI GT. Obviously the TDI will be the winner, but not having driven one yet, I'm not sure if it will suit me.

It's all very well to look at the official ADR figures, but they are often very conservative in my humble opinion.

What are real world experiences out there?

    cheers

    Hi Greg
I have a gt sport tdi and when I did a trip to Wagga before Xmas I managed
to get 850kms out of 50 litres and the car only had 2400 kms on the clock.
So I'm expecting a lot better when its fully run in

Hi Greg, I have the Jetta Turbo (same engine as the GTi) which is about 1,200 km old. I am on my 3rd tank of petrol but would say I get about 520 km in town (Sydney) running.

      Hope that helps.
      Tom

I have a GTI and I travelled 600km/50litre (8.3l/100km)last weekend mostly on highway. Normally I would have got 500km/47litre (9.4l/100km) on weekdays to work. My GTI has 4000km on the clock.

BTW, yesterday when I had my car for maintenance work, and I've got a 2.0TDI from the dealer for the day. It was a 2006 current model (38000km on the clock), and I noticed that the engine is so noisy. Does it happen to all other diesel cars?

yep noisy as hell under hard acceleration, cant hear them when cruising because you can sit on and accelerate from 1000rpm aaand when you're idling at a traffic light with the windows down it sounds like a tractor

My GTI sounds like a tractor too, does have 90,000+kms on it though...a guy at work has a new BMW M5 and that thing sounds like a tractor as well at idle...

As far as my fuel consumption goes, anywhere between 500kms and up to 675kms on freeway, i found my APR tune also helps on fuel consumption as well as long as im not driving it like i stole it

I have a GTI manual. I'm now up to 8000km.

On a trip from Sydney to Port Macquarie over the Xmas holidays, when we had double demerit points (so i was driving like a granny) i got 6.8l/100km there and back.

Around Sydney, driving 10km each way in peak hour traffic every day and about the same amount of weekend driving when traffic is a bit lighter, i get an overall average of 10L/100km.
Thats not thrashing it, just having a play every now and then when traffic permits.
Economy gets better as the trip length increases. If I go for a drive out toward Blacktown straight from work I regularly see under 10L/100 (say 8.5 to 9) for the trip.

For a car with such strong performance I think thats great economy.

Hope that helps (Go for the GTI)

I've got a Jetta Turbo and on average I get around 550 - 580 kms before I have to fill up again. It's done almost 5000kms since new.

On a recent long distance trip one tank took me to almost 700kms since it was cruising most of the way.

I did some 'spirited' driving on the great ocean road australia day weekend and the average fuel consumption it returned for the entire trip (about 500kms) was 8.7L/100kms. I cruised from home to the G.O.R.. blasted along the twisty bits at a great rate of knots and then cruised my way home once I was happy.

Best I ever got from my 2006 Mk V GTI was 6.3 l/100km - following my daughter back from Sydney to Coffs Harbour on L-plates!! Not how you want to drive a GTI!!! But I regularly get 580 out of a tank before the fuel light comes on; current average consumption is 7.9 l/100km over a mix of town & country driving (North Coast NSW). Very happy with that!

                      Cheers

07 Jetta TDI DSG with around 17,000k's - with city driving something like 850k's per tank although I usually fill up as soon as the low fuel warning goes bong (apparently there is a lifter pump in the tank that is lubricated by the fuel and if the fuel is low then it wears faster).

With freeway driving 1100k's is possible in favourable conditions but 1000 is usual. I've never seen the distance to empty go over 990 but maybe it can't display 4 digit numbers.

I don't deliberately drive to save fuel (i.e. I don't turn the CC to ECON) so I'm sure I could do better.

manual GT TDI - only got about 1500kms on it so far. Only ever filled it up once cause the dealer filled it up the first time where I got about 750km out of that tank. Still driving on the next tank but I've got about a quarter of a tank left now and have done about 750km since fill up with the computer claiming I've got another 130km left so I'll probably end up getting at least 800km out of that tank. Mostly city driving but its Adelaide so the traffic isn't really that bad.

I find the last quarter of the tank goes very fast. can catch you out if your
                            on the freeway.

Mostly do freeway and get 1000k's. Newcastle/Sydney freeway.
Sydney/Hume Hwy better again as its more flat.

I think you will find the distance to empty calculates after a refill on how
you were previously driving the car.
I fill up at the end of the freeway sydney side and my distance to empty
always indicates around 1100-1200 until empty. but remember you have
the big dipper at the end of the freeway and your not using any fuel for
                              around 2 k's
