I've been fighting for 2 years to have my Mechatronics declared "outside parameters" and have finally been successful last week. Barloworld was much more receptive this time after the bad recent press, even though it didn't relate to my model. I had to demonstrate to a "technician" what it was doing, and thankfully one of the faults showed itself on the joint test drive (snatching when moving between reverse and first). Other faults are jerky changes 3-2-1, slow upchanges and slamming clutch engagement after idling in drive with foot on brake.

They needed to have a demonstrable problem before they would hook it up to the diagnostic, which immediately revealed "out of parameter". So now I have a goodwill mechatronics change coming soon (parts are ordered from Germany), and they have said I will have to pay half the labour (around $160). Maybe mine's less because I only have 46,000k and just under 5 years old.

I will claim the labour cost from my Allianz warranty, so they will be happier than if they had to foot the whole bill, I'm sure.

Happy also because I was going to do the DSG service at the 5yr mark, so now I'll save whatever that would have cost.
They won't change the filter though, so that's an extra $40 or so you'll have to wear.

      Don't think mine has a filter, it's a my08.

        It certainly does.

Yes, of course...Doh - I was recollecting that the early GTI had a DSG oil cooler which was discontinued, not the filter.

Surely they would change that too, when they do a warranty replacement of the mechatronics?

Will know soon, when they do it.

Just to finalise this thread the mechtronics was replaced a few days ago and I don't seem to think it drives any different to before.

I'm puzzled actually as to why you would've wanted it replaced. If you thought it drove fine and there were no issues then to have a new one fitted IMHO opens you up to the possibility that the new one is worse than the one you had... then you have all the stuffing around with the dealer to get another new one fitted again.
the other thing I would be worried about is what the workmanship is like. I know not all dealers are muppets... but some are pretty bad and I HATE the idea of letting them loose on my cars to work on them. You just never know what they "forget" to put back on etc....

Yeah, just wait when they start working on the DSG that are for the recall. How many car owners that never had an issue with the DSG and probably would never have, will come here to vent their anger?

If it's not broken don't fix it.

Took me a few days to realise with the new mechtronics box fitted its now starting off in first gear at all times
where as previously always started in 2nd unless on a steepish slope.
Does not engage 5th until 70km/h and top gear until 80 km/h, which previously was from memory 60 and 70.
So will be interested to see how the fuel range is effected.

It was the dealer saying it was not in the parameters, I suppose you can say I got a cheap extended warranty for another
few years.I never did take up the extra three year warranty which would have run out by now and would have been more
than what I paid to make up the difference of the good will claim.

                        Mine was replaced yesterday.

                        Parts List

Drives like a brand new car - I guess as it gradually worsens you don't notice the degradation, and you don't realize how bad it was till the new one is in.

It always started off in first gear. Under gentle driving it changes into 2nd almost immediately, I imagine the diesel would change even sooner due to the extra low torque - this could fool you into thinking it takes off in second. When slowing for lights and taking off again it won't change back to 1st until just before dead stop - so if you roll on you'll most likely stay in 2nd.

My tdi always takes off in 1st gear unless I manually leave it in 2nd.

Had the same done to my GTI today with the same parts. Runs a treat now. A real revelation. No bogging down in second gear from rolling start.

BTW part# "VWN91084501 Seal, Trans Oil Filter HR" is the O-ring on the base of the Trans filter housing. Like your parts list mine doesn't mention the actual filter (VW02E305051C). They wouldn't have gone to that trouble and not replaced the filter right??
